NetBSD is een Unix-achtig besturingssysteem met zijn wortels in de 386BSD 0.1-tak. De eerste versie, NetBSD 0.8, was beschikbaar op 21 april 1993 en heeft zich sindsdien steeds verder ontwikkeld. Van de drie bekende BSD-varianten, FreeBSD, OpenBSD en NetBSD, ondersteunt de laatste de meeste verschillende platformen. De eerste release candidate van versie 3.0 is met de volgende aankondiging uitgebracht:

on behalf of the NetBSD Release Engineering team, I'm happy to announce that the release process for NetBSD 3.0 has officially begun. The list of significant source changes from NetBSD 2.0 to 3.0 is available here. The first release candidate is available for download here
We expect to have RC2 available on the FTP server in about a week, and we hope this will be the final release candidate. So if all goes well the release of 3.0 is approximately three weeks away. We appreciate your patience and support which we hope will make this the best NetBSD release to date!
