Slot 1 dood verklaard

As first reported here early this year, the Celeron Slot One platform will be dead in the water by June. That is the preparatory move by Intel for other Slot One platforms to disappear too, as we reported from February's Intel Developer Forum. The move is partly to do with new designs and the end of legacy systems that Intel and its customers are planning. Again, at IDF, senior VP Paul Otellini confirmed that Intel was moving to a socket design.

IDT interview

FullOn3D: Do you intend on supporting 3dnow! all the way or will you switch to SSE/Katmai? Why does your 3dnow! implementation not seem as good as AMD's and why does AMD still beat your FPU while yours is pipelined? Are you expecting a superb FPU in future products?

IDT: Our intent is to exclusively support 3DNow! with the WinChip 2, 3 and 4. As we have not announced any products after WinChip 4, we cannot comment on future support of SSE. IDT's implementation of 3DNow! is being refined in upcoming products to be at least as good as AMD's.

IDT WinChip2a 300 MHz review

The WinChip2A is a good overall chip with decent performance comparable to an AFR66 version of the K6-2. The WinChip2A is the lowest cost 3dnow! enabled CPU and right now, if its price is significantly lower than AMD's K6-2 then this CPU becomes the low-cost leader simply because of its decent overall package.

3dfx - 16 of 22 bits?

Here it comes...

3dfx doesn't actually render a 16-bit image that is dithered to look like a 22-bit image... it actually renders a 22-bit image!!!

But how, you might ask, if the ramDAC can only contain 16-bit information can a 22-bit image be rendered? Well let me explain...

3DNow! on the K7 has been enhanced slightly since the K6-2 and K6-III. For a matrix-times-vector transform loop, essential for all 3D graphics, the K6-2 was coming in around 20 clock cycles per vector to transform, and the K7 is at about 14. The P3 (with SSE optimizations) can get to about 18 cycles. The total maximum throughput will remain 4 operations per cycle, though, placing the K7-500's peak FP calculation rate at 2 gigaflops.

Merced Geruchten

Well, now Joe Blow can just go get another CPU and plop it in his machine for more horsepower. This completely goes against the current Intel sales model of getting you into another machine every 18 months. What do the OEM's like Dell and Compaq do? I am sure they don't want to be VAR's for selling extra Merced's as systems upgrades. Intel might like the scenario of selling multiple CPU's to every user, but that's sure going to piss off Dell and Compaq when they would rather sell a whole new system.

Anand's Voodoo3 review

3dfx did a good job with the Voodoo3, it wasn't a stellar production on 3dfx's part, the lack of 32-bit color rendering and AGP texturing support are among the two biggest gripes you'll have with the video card, and its lack of a true OpenGL ICD will keep most professionals from going down the path of the Voodoo3 as most professional 3D rendering programs require a fully functional OpenGL ICD to work properly. The 2D performance and 2D quality of the Voodoo3 are amazing, considering just last year 3dfx was a 3D-only company, whereas now they are going head to head with companies like Matrox that have been boasting their incredible 2D image quality for quite some time now.

Shuttle HOT-597 review

The HOT 597 is definitely one of the cleanest and fastest SS7 boards currently available. Excellent stability combined with more than decent overclockabilty provide the backbone for a system in which even the lethal considered combination of the VIA MVP3 chipset and the TNT -based graphics adapters can be configured without major hassles. Part of this can be attributed to the elegant incorporation of the different IRQ routing table selections into the chipset features. In addition, hardware monitoring from within the BIOS or, if installed, through a Windows utility provides the necessary information about the state of the system that, in case of user absence (24/7 use) also shuts down automatically in case the CPU temperature limit is exceeded.
