Rise Technology hopes to survive in the increasingly vicious market for budget PCs by focusing its energies on a low-power version of its x86-compatible processor. David Lin, Rise's chairman and chief executive, said a low-power version of the company's mP6 processor will let manufacturers produce cheaper PCs than those using x86-comparable processors. Rise microprocessors already require less power than chips such as the mobile Pentium II, which lets equipment manufacturers such as Acer to use cheaper cooling subsystems and power supplies. By the third quarter, when Rise switches to a 0.18-micron processor from a 0.25-micron one, the mP6 will need 4W of power, compared with the 6.3W chips Intel plans to launch this month. "To compete with Intel, you need to change the rules," Lin said. "Packaging is about 50 percent of the cost, and for Intel it's more. For us, packaging is much less because of our low power consumption." Rise's next-generation processor, the mP6 II will start at 300MHz and includes 256kB on-chip L2 cache.

Voodoo 3 3000 AGP Review

The Voodoo3 is 3dfx's next generation 2D/3D accelerator following the Banshee. The Voodoo3 will be available in several flavors (all of which will use 16MB of RAM) including this particular card, the Voodoo3 3000 AGP. The 3000 runs at 166Mhz as opposed to its predecessors that ran in the 90-110Mhz range. This is due in part to the fabrication process moving from a .35 micron to .25 micron process. One can easily see the physical layout and dimensions of the Voodoo3 are STB's. At first glance you'd think you were looking at a Velocity 4400 TNT card. This is not surprising being that STB definitely has some of the best layout designers in the industry.

Zo en dat is niet zomaar een aanklacht, die vent mag (maximaal) 40 jaar zitten.

Smith is believed to have originated the Melissa virus -- which caused worldwide e-mail disruption this week -- from his apartment in Aberdeen. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of $480,000 in fines and 40 years in prison. "Computer crime is a new and emerging problem that can affect millions of consumers and their personal lives," said New Jersey Attorney General Peter Verniero on Friday.

The signs are that Alpha Processor Inc, a consortium backed by Samsung, is beginning to take on Intel at its own game. According to Jeff Borkowski, VP of business development at API, the consortium will exploit the market outside of Compaq and focus its energies on Linux, NT server, digital content creation and MCAD. He said: "Samsung is making significant investments in copper, SOI and flip chip technology which will enable us to continue to deliver the fastest Alpha processors in the market. We have an Alpha architectural license (sic) that enables us to design low cost, yet high performance Alpha processors for specific markets." API will roll out a series of promotions. It has hired spin paramedics Miller Shandwick, and a series of other marketing companies to promote its systems. At the same time, it has rolled out its global service organisation and has hired Linux pundit Rich Payne as well as ex-Compaq exec Jim Snyder. Later on today, API will kick off its benchmarking programme on its Web site. It is positioning systems against Intel Xeon machines and claims they are comprehensively outgunned.
