SE design + Kenwood 52x review

Ik kijk ff bij Sharky Extreme, blijkt dat het hele design omgegooid is. Ik kan niet echt zeggen dat het er mooier op geworden is...

Anyweg, ze hebben wel een review van de Kenwood 52 speed CD-ROM drive. Er zit dus "TrueX technology" in en dat schijnt het allemaal sneller te maken:

By using this technique, Kenwood's 52x CD-ROM only needs to hit and maintain a constant linear velocity rate of 4,800rpm. This lowers the noise associated with CD-ROMs to a new low, along with dramatically reducing spinup times. Also, thanks to the multibeam pickup technique of TrueX, the Kenwood drive not only matches the speed of CD-ROMs that have twice the spindle speed of the Kenwood unit, it exceeds their level of performance.

Quantum Ultra/66 harddisk

Quantum heeft vandaag de Fireball CX drive aangekondigd. Het ding draait op 5400 rondjes per minuut en ondersteund de nieuwe UltraATA/66 interface. Hier een hap uit de press release:

Celeron 433 review

Thresh's Firingsquad heeft weer eens de primeur met de eerste Celeron 433 review. Uiteraard zit er ook weer wat info bij over het overclocken van het ding, daar koop je immers een Celeron voor:

The first setting attempted was a very mild bus speed increase from 66Mhz to 75Mhz, or 488Mhz. The system booted up without problem, even at a default voltage of 2.0. With that success spurring us on, I then moved one step up, to 83Mhz on the bus scale. This 53Mhz jump brought us to 541Mhz, but unfortunately, the chip froze on POST.

I then incrementally upped the voltage to 2.05, 2.10, and 2.20, to no degree of success. Just as a test, I set the bus to the full 100Mhz FSB at 2/3 AGP. Needless to say, 650Mhz was out of the Celeron's league, and we were forced to accept the fact that our chip was limited to a one-step-up overclocking of 6.5x75Mhz, or 488Mhz.

Ok, die's dus waardeloos...

Intel maatregelen tegen remarking

C|Net heeft een artikel over de CPU remarking en de maatregelen die Intel daartegen onderneemt.

In a related effort, the company also admitted it has added "deterrents" to the silicon of the Pentium III and Pentium III Xeon that will make it more difficult to overclock, or increase the megahertz, of a processor. While this will deter remarking, computer hobbyists are sure to raise a stink about it. Overclocking has become something of a cult sport among enthusiasts, who trade tips on select Web sites and persistently dog Intel about its anti-overclocking efforts. Intel has bluffed us before about "doing something to stop overclocking", but I say this through personal experience and what I have learned from others, BE VERY CAREFUL OVERCLOCKING the Pentium 3 until more is known about it. There does seem to be something "different" about the P3, but until more data is collected about it, we won't know for sure.

Nascar Revolution interview

Nog een interview over een race game. Deze gaat over Nascar Revolution (van Electronic Arts, dus niet Papyrus/Sierra). Hier een stuk:

During our first interview, you stated that NASCAR Revolution would appeal to arcade racing fans and hard core simulation fans. After the release of the game, many hard core racing simulation fans insist that the game is not a simulation. How do you respond to those claims?

Dave – I believe that we have delivered a game that casual game players and hard core NASCAR fans will enjoy. We spent a lot of time detailing and tuning the cars and tracks in the game. Our goal was to provide a user of our game with the sights, sounds, fanfare, and overall experience of attending a NASCAR Winston Cup race, while allowing them to go one step further, and actually race as their favorite driver. It is a simulation consistent with other EA SPORTS simulations--a simulation of the sport with the emphasis on competition and fun gameplay.

Trans Am Racing interview

Sports-Gaming.com heeft een interview gepost met Adrian Penn, een of ander ventje die bezig is met de ontwikkeling van Trans Am Racing '68-'72 (rondraggen met een ouwe Amerikaanse kist, ziet er erg wreed uit). Hier alvast een vraag:

How many cars and tracks will be in the game? Name a few.

There's 12 tracks and 25+ cars (we'll cram in as many as we can). Cars included are '64 Pontiac Tempest GTO, '67 Ford Mustang, '68 Chevy Camaro, '69 Chevy Camaro, '69 Ford Mustang, '70 AMC Javelin, '70 Ford Mustang, '70 Dodge Challenger, '70 Plymouth Barracuda, '70 Pontiac Firebird, '70 Chevy Camaro, '72 AMC Javelin. Tracks included in the game are Lime Rock Park, Road America, Meadowdale, Riverside, Bridgehampton, Donneybrooke, Mosport, and others.

The tracks are very realistic and include many details. On the Lime Rock track, for instance, there is a church that is off into the distance. A minor detail, but we were very interested in maintaining authenticity throughout the entire game.

Communicator 5 preview

ZDNet heeft een artikel gewijdt aan Communicator 5, Netscape's nieuwe browser met super snelle Gecko engine.

The layout engine, named Gecko, is at the core of Navigator 5.0, and Netscape Director of Engineering Rick Gessner said it will be the fastest, smallest and most standards-compliant layout engine available -- features that Netscape (Nasdaq:NSCP) hopes will help it win its bloody browser war with rival Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT).
Ook goed nieuws voor webdesigners:

With Gecko, "we are way ahead of the game with CSS," or cascading style sheets, Gessner said."We have a great CSS1, a great XML story, and soon, a great CSS2 story." Other features in the layout engine include support for Document Object Model, a mechanism for manipulating documents via C++ or JavaScript; a high-speed compositing and rendering engine; and support for XUL, a user-interface language.

De eerste betaversie zal in juli verschijnen, de final release ergens eind dit jaar. Ik hoop dat Netscape weer wat marktaandeel kan terugwinnen van die vieze Mikroschoft Internet Imploder gebruikers (haha, 60% van de bezoekers van deze site).

Quake 3 editing

Op AGN 3D vond ik een koel stukje over het maken van je eigen QIII levels. Check maar even uit:

Got something really cool for yall today. Been working on them for awhile, decided to finally post them. Most of you know that Quake 3 Arena will ship a couple months down the road and that the editor Q3Radiant for it will come on the CD. Q3Radiant is a new version of QERadiant, an editor based on the original id level editor. QERadiant is a powerful editor but due to the lack of documentation not many people use it except for professionals. Well I have started a series of short tutorials aimed at teaching people the basics of QERadiant so they will be ready to edit Quake3 as soon as it is released. I am going to try and keep the tutorials simple and not get to the entity specifics of any game, though the tutorials will be for Quake2 since that's the game QERadiant supports the easiest.

PC playstation emulator

Dit vond ik op AGN 3D:

Connectix announced that they are working on a PC version of their Virtual Gamestation Playstation emulator. This means that there will be two legal Playstation emulators on the market with the addition of the upcoming release of the Bleem emulator. The Playstation makes an interesting target for emulator creators because you can actually play store bought games in the emulator. In comparison the UltraHLE N64 emulator only works with pirated ROMs, a much less favorable approach in the eyes of the law. The big question is if Sony's repeated requests to have shipment of the Virtual Game Station halted will continue to fall of the deaf ears of the court, or if eventually the emulators will be outlawed.

Tiberian Sun preview

Bij Computer Games Online hebben ze een preview gepost van Tiberian Sun, de opvolger van Red Alert. Ze hebben onder andere wat info over waarom het spel weer uitgesteld is en wat de nieuwe features zijn ten opzichte van Red Alert. Hier alvast een stuk uit de preview:

Okay, let's get it out of the way now: yes, Command & Conquer 2: Tiberian Sun has been delayed again; the official word is that it will now ship in "early summer". (We'll pause here for those who want to go rant and rave on Usenet.) Okay, everybody back now? The reason for the delay is, quite simply, the fact that the game's not done; it certainly isn't done now (March, the previous ETA Westwood gave). Those who anguish over delays and demand that a game ship right now often forget what happens when companies respond. Now, what are the specific reasons for the delay? Westwood's Aaron Cohen, who recently brought the game by our offices, lists several items that are still in need of tweaking. "The game is about 75 0one, but there's a lot that we feel is important that still needs to be polished," Cohen notes.

Info over Q3A maps

Op een Quake 3: Arena messageboard heeft een designer van het spel wat info losgelaten over de verschijningsdatum van de demo en het kunnen gebruiken van Quake I/II maps in Quake 3:

I saw a few posts about people wanting older maps in Q3A. We don't have any concrete plans, but *IF* they were to be included in Q3A, it wouldn't be in the single player rotation. They'd probably be included as "easter egg" maps for net/lan play only.

And yes, Tim has done a conversion of Q1DM6 to Q3A. As stated above, it's unknown at this time if these maps will ever be released.

Here's the bit about the release of Q3ATest [This means sometime in March for you guys that are a bit slow :)]:

>When will the Q3T demo be released? >Is there any more accurate date than 'march'?

Yes. Hopefully within the next 18 days.

Voodoo3/TNT 2 comparison

Bij 3DCore hebben ze een vergelijking in elkaar geknutseld van de Voodoo3 en de, zoals inmiddels toch wel duidelijk is, wat snellere TNT2.

Hier alvast wat info uit de previews:

The difference between these three models are the significant increase in Clock Speed, Triangles/Second, Megatexels/Second and Ramdac. The higher models (3000 & 3500) have added TV-Out features as well. The upcoming nVidia Riva TNT2 is going to be the strong competitor for the Voodoo3, and by the look of the current TNT by nVidia outperforming the Voodoo2 in many occasions, anything could happen.

Rise mP6 PR266 review

Upgrade Center heeft een review gebakken van de Rise mP6 PR266, een nieuw low budget CPUutje:

The mP6 PR266 is speced to run at a FSB speed of 100 with a 2X multiplier (2x 100MHz). The effective 200MHz speed has been given a PR rating of 266MHz. Although I'm not a big fan of PR ratings, I'd have to say I was impressed with the speed this 200MHz processor was capable of and if they wanted to claim it was as fast as other companies 266MHz processors I think I'd agree. It was certainly no slowpoke. The mP6 does require a split voltage supply of 2.8VCCcore (+/-5%) and 3.3VCCi/o (+/-5%).

De prestaties zijn niet eens zo slecht. De business performance van de Rise blijft achter bij die van de Cyrix (op gelijke kloksnelheid - 200MHz) maar in Quake is-ie net zo snel als een K6-2 op 266Mhz.

Voodoo3 preview

System Logic heeft een preview gepost van de 3Dfx Voodoo3. De V3 wordt vergeleken met de TNT en daarmee is deze preview nogal achterhaald, aangezien Tom en Sharky inmiddels toch wel duidelijk hebben gemaakt dat de TNT2 oneindig meer kont gaat schoppen dan wat voor V3 dan ook. Anyway, hier een hap uit de preview:

Voodoo3 absolutely trounced the TNT, even when running in Direct 3D mode, it creamed it. In case you are not aware of this, Half-Life actually uses the Quake II engine. The engine was fine tuned and tweaked beyond belief for this game (the game itself is amazing, you should go buy it). This is the best example of exactly what the V3 is capable of.

Cool that Cache!

Hothardware heeft een artikel over PII cache cooling in elkaar gepleurd:

ne of the most prominent issues with stability of an overclocked P2 is actually the performance of the on board cache, which most often times can't keep up with the higher end CPU cores. This chip actually has Toshiba 225 Mhz. Synchronous SRAM Cache on the P2 module which is faster than most P2s of the '98 vintage. These parts are set up to run pretty fast and as a result need to be cooled as well! Intel's design doesn't really provide decent thermal conditions for the on board cache of the P2. How do I know all this? I took the P2 Slot 1 Cartridge apart of course! This isn't an easy task! Don't even THINK of trying this yourself unless you know exactly what you are doing. Unless of course you don't mind a nice expensive P2 Coaster for your beverage after your attempt!

De oplossing die Hothardware heeft bedacht is erg simpel en efficient (na 'behandeling' deed de PII 525Mhz ipv 500 voorheen). Zie Hothardware voor de info.

Linux Office: goed of slecht?

Stel dat Micro$oft inderdaad Office voor Linux zou uitbrengen, is dat dan goed of slecht voor Linux als een alternatief OS? Op The Register een klein stukje over deze belangrijke vraag:

Like it or not, MS Office is the productivity standard for business, so the people trying to get Linux accepted in business will - quite possibly against their better judgement - be more inclined to accept Office than most other Redmond-inspired standards. If Microsoft did do it then the move might result in Linux threatening MS at the client level as well as the server, but if MS reckons that Linux is going to make headway at client level anyway, it might be prepared to use Office to try to control it. Get Office in there, tie it closer to MS standards and NT servers, and maintain world domination by alternative means?

De laatste tijd horen we erg veel van grote bedrijven die op de "Linux bandwagon" springen. De grote vraag is of dat uiteindelijk geen invloed gaat krijgen op Linux als een Open Source OS, omdat bedrijven toch zullen proberen delen die ze zelf ontwikkeld hebben voor zichzelf te houden.

For those of you who do not feel like playing the Daikatana Multiplayer Deathmatch demo on Mplayer, Drew has sent us a multiplayer crack for the game. The multiplayer crack will allow you to play it on the Internet or on your home LAN without having to go through Mplayer. Ok so it sounds a little shady, but the dang thing is a demo :) You can download it from our site here.

Soundworks FPS2000 speakerset

Jeremy van AGN3D/AGN Hardware heeft een review gepost van de Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 digital speakers. De prijs (179 dollar) is redelijk gezien het heftige uiterlijk van de speakers. Hier wat info:

The FPS 2000 system includes 4 matched high-output satellite speakers that include 2 œ" long throw drivers powered by 7 watts of power. Even though 7 watts may not sound like much, the quality of the speakers make maximum usage of that wattage. Using my handy sound meter, I was registering an average of 95 decibels of output. Not loud enough to make you deaf, but loud enough to have the neighbors complaining if you live in an apartment complex. In comparison my 150 watts per channel Technics stereo had an output of around 120 decibels and the S2 4100 speakers from Midiland were about 105 decibels. Considering the fact that the satellites are only 7 watts, I think 95 decibels is incredibly loud!

Canopus kapt ermee

Canopus, bekend van de Spectra 2500 TNT en Pure3D Voodoo kaarten, stapt uit de video business. Het nieuws was al langer bekend en werd gisteren door Canopus bevestigd:

The Spectra 2500, Pure 3D and Pure 3D II line of graphics cards are no longer in production. We have made a special arrangement with Alienware to sell our Spectra 3200 graphics card in the US. The VideoPort 600, the 5.25" drivebay video-in for the Spectra 2500/3200 will be available through the Canopus Factory Store beginning in April.

Due to the very short life cycles for graphics boards and the consolidation of the graphics chip and board industry, Canopus has decided to concentrate on our line of Digital Video Editing products. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you and we assure you that if you have purchased any graphics product from us WE WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT YOU with technical support and the terms of our 3 year warranty! Driver updates will be provided over our web site for as long as the chip vendor updates their own drivers. In the future, Canopus may produce graphics cards again if the right chip comes along. Meer TNT2 benchmarks

Sharky heeft nog een paar nieuwe Quake2 Crusher en Half-Life Blowout benchmarks toegevoegd aan de Sharky Extreme TNT2 preview. In de Crusher timedemo was de TNT2 ruwweg 10% sneller dan de Voodoo3-3500, bij Half-Life waren de resultaten omgekeerd. Zie de Sharky Extreme news voor de grafiekjes.
