The next battle in the struggle for the heart and soul of the 3D shooter, so to speak, will most likely be fought out in March, when id Software releases Quake III: Arena, and Epic MegaGames releases Unreal Tournament.And while those release dates are certainly subject to change, one thing is not--both companies are releasing as their next project games that--at least in the design doc stage--are identical.
Both Unreal Tournament and Quake III: Arena are online-only, multiplayer games. Both will offer offline play against computer controlled 'bots, and both will have global ranking systems that will track players around the world on a sort of leader board for deathmatchers.
