Bij SiliconStrategies lezen we dat Fuji een 8"-waferproductielijn van Motorola heeft gekocht. Fujifilm Microdevices en Tohoku Semiconductor, Motorola's dochterbedrijf in Japan, zijn het eens geworden over de overname van Tohoku's 8"-waferfabriek door Fuji. Deze fabriek stond al sinds december 2002 stil omdat Motorola een andere fabriek in gebruik genomen heeft. Er heerst momenteel een tekort aan chips en aan Super CCD-chips in het bijzonder. Een SCCD maakt gebruik van achthoekige fotodiodes die in een honingraat-patroon gelegd zijn. Hierdoor wordt de kwaliteit van de opnames volgens Fuji beter. Verder werd door het bedrijf het volgende gezegd:
"CCDs are really short to satisfy demand," a Fuji spokesman said. "Fujifilm Microdevices was considering [expanding] its production capacity. TSC's fab was close to the company and the existing fab will enable us to quickly modify and prepare production."
[...] Fuji Film thus far has been using Super CCD devices internally for its own digital cameras, but it has recently sold the device for use in mobile phones with cameras. The company will modify the 8-inch line to a CCD-dedicated production line as soon as possible, said the spokesman. Details on fab capacity and when operations would begin were not disclosed.
