As for faults, we've already talked about a few including the weakly designed battery hatch, the scratch-prone textured aluminum shell, and the oddly coded Yepp Explorer audio management software. In addition to these, I'm a bit concerned about the 5-hour battery life that a 'AAA' Alkaline can provide you with. Anything under 10-hrs of battery life is a big no-no in my books, especially when we're dealing with a high-efficiency product like a solid-state MP3 player with low-power Indiglo backlighting and energy-conserving Sleep functions. However, with some of the newer high-performance NiMH rechargeable 'AAA' battery systems and aggressive use of sleep and backlighting configuration, it should be fairly simple to extend battery life to 7 to 7.5 hrs. We find the price of the 30SH to be a bit too steep, especially since an Apple 5GB iPod is just within financial reach at $299 US. However, that said, it seems the street price of the YP-30SH hovers between $139 and $199 US.
Once again, Samsung has waved their wands and concocted a feature-rich and attractive little product. The Yepp YP-30SH isn't short of functionality, and despite its little annoyances, they can be easily overlooked since its strengths are quite evident. The YP-30SH is an ideal product for both students and professionals alike. Samsung just released a few new players including the small but impressive YP-90S and the expandable YP-700 player. Yep, we’ll be keeping a close eye on Yepps.
