This was the first drive I've tested from Freecom and I went into this review not really knowing what to expect. I found out that the 32A has an impressive list of features and some very good all around performance. As a writer, the drive really blew me away. Unlike some other 32x writers, Freecom's 32A was noticeably faster than even the fastest 24x writers I've tested. Unfortunately this speed doesn't come without a price. For best results, you will need to use media rated at 32x. If you don't, your discs might not be readable.
But the 32A isn't just a good writer. It's also a pretty good reader too. Freecom rates the drive's read speeds and DAE at 40x. Under most circumstances, the 32A had no problems exceeding that speed in our tests, but not everything was perfect. While the drive was able to read pressed and CD-R media at up to 40x, it could only read CD-RW media at 32x. I still haven't found a 32x writer that can read CD-RW discs at full speed, but there are quite a few 24x writers that can. I also had a few problems when doing DAE with pressed audio CD's. When extracting each track individually, the drive had a tendency to slow down on some of them. Since this did not happen with CD-R discs, I'm hoping it can be fixed with a firmware update.
