Ironically, while the above tests are remarkably consistent and clear, the overall conclusion about the i845D chipset is not. The fact is, while the i845D lost every test, it lost almost all of them by an extremely small margin. In 5 out of 7 tests, the 845 and P4XB boards were within 5% of each other (5% being the generally accepted number at which increased performance becomes noticeable). For all noticeable intents and purposes, therefore, the two boards performed nearly identically with the VIA holding a very slight lead.
Furthermore, it must be kept in mind that the i845D is Intel’s first attempt at a DDR chipset, whereas VIA has been making them for over a year. Looking back at AMD’s initial DDR roll-out, its obvious that it took chipset manufacturers some time to fully understand how to extract the highest level of performance possible from the DDR platform. In fact, all of the initial chipsets available when DDR shipped have undergone at least one revision save for AMD’s—but AMD never intended to remain a heavy player in the chipset market anyway. In fact, the AMD 760 chipset remained in the market longer than expected because VIA’s own DDR memory technology wasn’t quite up to par.
After taking the two factors listed above into consideration, its hard not to label Intel’s own i845D chipset a success. While it won’t redefine P4 performance or deliver an amazing increase in speed, it does offer a stable, fast, and official Intel DDR platform on which to base a system.
