De mensen van VIA hebben een press release de deur uit gedaan over alweer een nieuwe processor die is uitgebracht. Vorige maand werd gemeld dat de 0,13 micron Cyrix voortaan C3 zou gaan heten en nu is daar alweer een nieuwe versie van uit. De nieuwe E-serie is voorzien van dezelfde core als de originele C3, maar dan in nieuwe Enhanced BGA verpakking. De chip heeft geen actieve koeling nodig, ondanks de kloksnelheid van maximaal 733MHz en zijn 192KB L1/2 cache. De processor past in standaard Socket370 moederborden met 100 of 133MHz FSB en kan gewoon Linux of Windows draaien. VIA richt hem uiteraard vooral op embedded systemen en ultra-goedkope computers:
The processor can be integrated onto industry standard Socket 370 motherboard form factors such as Micro ATX, Flex ATX, and ITX, allowing rapid time to market for Internet-ready ultra Value PC, Information PC, and Digital PC Appliance designs such as home gateways and set top boxes. It can also be used for application specific mainboard designs, including very small form factors for low profile chassis. A reference design kit is available for developers for evaluation purposes.
