Alhoewel Intel heeft beloofd nog een jaar door te gaan met de levering van de Socket 423-based Pentium 4 na de introductie van de P4 Northwood (die 478 pinnetjes telt), weigeren moederbordfabrikanten er nog nieuwe producten voor te ontwikkelen. De verwachting is dat als de Northwood in de tweede helft het jaar op de markt verschijnt er (bijna) geen prijsverschil tussen beide Pentium 4 varianten zal ontstaan. Grote OEMs zullen om die reden weinig vraag naar de 'oude' Pentium 4 creëren, wat voor moederbordfabrikanten als Asus en MSI een belangrijke factor is. Intel promised that after the Socket 478-based Pentium 4 hits the market in the third quarter of the year, shipments of the Socket 423-based one will continue for a year. However, clone and OEM markets revealed that their product planning for Socket 423-based Pentium 4s for the second half of the year has completely ceased. Taiwanese motherboard makers pointed out that according to Intel’s roadmap the new Pentium 4 will start from 1.3GHz in clock speed but will be sold for the same price as the old one and will pose an immense threat to AMD processors.
[...] Although Taiwanese motherboard makers, including market leader Asustek, have not been notified of the new Pentium 4’s pricing, they do not rule out the possibility of no price difference between old and new versions with the same clock speed.
[...] First-tier motherboard vendors, including Asustek and Gigabyte, and most of the small and medium-sized manufacturers so far have stopped research and development of the Socket 423-based motherboards and are heading towards products based on the new Pentium 4. They pointed out that Socket 423 motherboards ordered by HP, Compaq and IBM have been gradually shipped, in 1,000-unit quantities per month, but they will not roll out any new models. Their OEM clients have asked them to develop Socket 478 motherboards.
