According to several sources at Microsoft, the company is set to finally release Windows XP Beta 2 today or early tomorrow, some 3 weeks behind schedule. The delay, however, occurred because Microsoft officials wanted this release to be of the highest possible quality; virtually everyone I've talked to at the company says that Microsoft has really raised the bar with this release. Likewise, everyone I've talked to in Redmond is extremely excited about Windows XP, which is uniformly described as the company's biggest release since Windows 95.
"Build 2462a will [likely] be signed off as Beta 2," one source confirmed this morning. "So far, just under half of the signoffs have occurred for Beta 2. It should be all done and dusted [today], but there's always a chance it will take until tomorrow. There are literally thousands of things to be signed off." Just as this newsletter was going to press, Microsoft sources informed me that the release of Beta 2 has indeed slipped to at least tomorrow. Microsoft has promised to alert me the second Beta 2 is signed off
