Software-update: ZimaOS 1.7.1

Security
  • Fixed a high-risk security issue in file services to improve the security of file access and operations
Added
  • Added be2net network driver support for Emulex NICs
  • Added support for Azerbaijani
Fixes
  • Fixed abnormal memory usage in certain file operation scenarios
  • Fixed an issue where empty folders could remain after cutting folders in certain scenarios
  • Fixed issues where backup tasks could fail or be interrupted in certain scenarios
  • Fixed an issue where some USB-related tasks could be lost after system restart
  • Fixed inaccurate RAID status display in certain scenarios
  • Fixed an issue where uninstalling an app could delete the app configuration folder
Improvements
  • Improved Docker container startup speed and startup efficiency
  • Improved the network configuration experience during Docker installation
  • Improved Docker Web URL port configuration with more flexible port settings
  • Improved YAML configuration saving compatibility to reduce failures caused by special content
  • Improved the display experience of App Store and app installation windows
  • Improved app migration compatibility
  • Improved Docker URL handling to better adapt to dynamic network environments

Community Discussion: How should the benefits of ZimaOS Free and Plus be divided?

Dear community members,@everyone

A few days ago, a long-time ZimaOS user wrote to us to discuss the 4-drive limit on the Free version:

*"First of all, thank you for developing and maintaining ZimaOS. As an individual user who has been following the development of home servers and NAS systems for a long time, I have experienced and compared several different NAS operating systems. What impressed me most about ZimaOS is its excellent usability and relatively open product philosophy.

However, the current limitation of supporting only four disks in the free version is something I find difficult to understand. For a NAS operating system, the number of supported disks is not an advanced feature; it is a fundamental hardware requirement for many users.

Many users do not purchase a complete NAS setup at once. They often start with two or three disks and gradually expand their storage over time. If users eventually need to install a fifth or sixth disk and discover that they must purchase the advanced version, the problem is not whether they need advanced features. The problem is that their own hardware expansion capability has been restricted.

Therefore, I hope the ZimaOS team can reconsider the disk limitation of the free version..

Thank you for taking the time to read this feedback, and thank you for your continued work on improving and maintaining ZimaOS."*

After reading it, we had a long discussion internally. Because this isn't really just about whether the Free version should support 4 drives or more, it's a much larger question: How should the benefits of ZimaOS Free and Plus be divided?

Plan A: Keep the current model

The Free version is permanently usable with up to 4 drives and 3 users. When you need more, or simply want to support our team, you can pay a one-time fee of $29 to unlock a lifetime Plus license.

We originally chose this model based on an observation: most home users start with 1–2 drives and rarely exceed 4 in the end. So the Free version stays fully functional for typical use cases, with the limit set at a point most people don't often hit. The upside is that it lowers the barrier to self-hosting and covers the actual needs of the vast majority of home users. But we're also thinking about another angle: part of the joy of self-hosting is scaling on demand. For users who like to add drives gradually, this might make the experience feel less satisfying. That's exactly why we want to hear what you think.

Plan B: 30-Day Full-Featured Trial

This approach draws from common industry practices: every new user, from the first time they boot ZimaOS, gets access to the full system with no drive limits, no user limits, and no need to choose a version upfront. For the first 30 days, you experience everything the system has to offer. After 30 days, if you wish to continue, you purchase a one-time $29 Lifetime License.

The advantage is simplicity and transparency: users get a complete experience first, then decide whether to pay, without any restrictions blocking them along the way, and the one-time purchase model avoids subscription fatigue. But we don't want our uers to feel that much pressure.

ZimaOS is volgens mij Chinees.

Our mission is to revolutionize the digital realm with personal servers that build and protect your data and economic sovereignty. We are the creators of CasaOS, an open source personal cloud OS that we launched in 2022 and has since earned over 12,000 GitHub stars.
