Software-update: Mozilla 1.7 beta

De ontwikkelaars van Mozilla.org hebben sinds kort een nieuwe versie van het Mozilla pakket uitgebracht. Ditmaal is het versienummer aangekomen bij 1.7 beta. Waar onder andere een optie is toegevoegd waardoor JavaScript het context menu niet meer kan uitschakelen, OS theme ondersteuning op het Linux-platform, krachtiger beheersopties op cookies, verbeterde synchronisatie met Palm pda's en verhoogde performance in de applicatie en lay-out. Het changelog ziet er als volgt uit:

  • Official Mozilla 1.7 Beta installer builds (including the OS X disk image) contain the Talkback crash reporting utility. To help us make 1.7 the most stable release yet, please submit your crash reports.
  • A new option to prevent sites using Javascript to block the browser's context menu.
  • A new set of icons for files that are associated with Mozilla.
  • Password Manager has a "show passwords" mode which will display saved passwords. You will need to enter your master password if you are using one.
  • The "Set as wallpaper" feature now has a confirmation dialog.
  • Linux GTK2 builds have improved support for OS themes.
  • Cookie dialogs have been reworked to make them more usable.
  • Date handling, especially on OS X, has been improved.

  • IMAP IDLE support has been added.
  • Support for "MSN Authentication" and Secure Password Authentication using SSPI NTLM auth for SMTP and POP3.
  • A new preference to "always use the default character encoding for replies" rather than using the encoding of the message being replied to.
  • Improvements to performance of downloading, viewing, and saving mail messages.

  • Chatzilla now supports zooming of fonts with keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl + and Ctrl -) as well as with the View menu.
  • Improved date handling; using the date/time format for the locale.
• Under the Hood
  • Mozilla 1.7 size and performance have improved dramatically with this release. When compared to Mozilla 1.6, Mozilla 1.7 Beta is 7% faster at startup, is 8% faster at window open time, has 9% faster pageloading times, and is 5% smaller in binary size.
  • A long-standing bug with CSS backgrounds on table elements has been fixed (standards mode only).
  • Support for Kerberos HTTP authentication using GSSAPI (benefits Unix-like platforms including Linux and OS X).
  • Support for smb:// URLs using the gnome-vfs library (only enabled in GTK2+XFT Linux builds).
  • Support for server push of XML documents using multipart/x-mixed-replace and XMLHttpRequest.
  • Liveconnect now works when a Java applet's codebase is in a different domain.
  • Very wide images (more than 4095px) will now display on Mac.
  • Support for the CSS3 opacity property.

Wat moet ik me voorstellen bij "MSN Authentication" Betekent dit dat Hotmail binnenkort toe te voegen is als mailaccount?

Zo te lezen is MSN authentication nodig voor smtp.email.msn.com.

Leuke quote van de ontwikkelaar (bug 223318 comment 3):

But for SMTP adding MSN is much like adding a completely different authentication.
That's because Microsoft did it again. They not only ignore RFC 2821 and the initial response argument, but implement the same authentication mechanism (MSN *is* NTLM) with another keyword another way.

Wat is nou eigenlijk anders aan Firefox? Waarom zou ik dat willen gebruiken ipv de Mozilla suite?

Ik zie het nut ook niet echt in van Firefox... het is toch gewoon de browser component van Mozilla? Je kunt toch gewoon Mozilla downen en alleen de browser installeren?

Firefox is inderdaad op Mozilla gebaseerd. Echter is de ontwikkeling qua features gericht op de eindgebruiker. Mozilla is meer gericht op ontwikkelaars. Firebird heeft zijn eigen roadmap en featureset. Dat wil zeggen dat er features in Firefox zitten die niet in Mozilla aanwezig zijn. Sommige van deze functies worden later alsnog aan Mozilla toegevoegd, maar de focus van de Mozilla Foundation ligt voor de toekomt op de standalone apllicaties als Firefox en Thunderbird. In principe zijn de engine en XUL het enige dat het nog gemeen heeft met Mozilla.

Zo is Firefox qua functionaliteit en interface beter aan te passen aan de wensen van de individuele gebruiker. Wanneer je een bepaalde feature mist in Firefox dan is de kans groot dat je deze functionaliteit alsnog kan toevoegen door middel van een extension (plugin).

hey maar dat is grappig hopen dat firefox 0.9 snel uitkomt, daar zal deze functionalieit dan ook in zitten verwacht ik.

Mozilla Firefox 0.9 zal gebaseerd zijn op Mozilla 1.7. Dit zal voorlopig de laatste versie zijn van Firefox die nieuwe dingen zal bevatten. Vanaf 0.9 zal de ontwikkeling van Firefox voor het grootste deel gefocused zijn op stabiliteit. Zodra ze vinden dat ie net zo stabiel is als de Mozilla Suite dan zal 1.0 uitkomen.
Wat je nog voor nieuwe dingen kunt verwachten voor Firefox 0.9:
- Populairste extentions meegeleverd met de installer
- Een knop om je standaard mail programma te starten. Ook staat er bij de knop of je al nieuwe mail hebt en hoeveel
- Verbetering van het extentions systeem
- Smartupdate (Firefox updaten zonder helemaal opnieuw te installeren)
- Exporteren en Importeren van instellingen, bookmarks, wachtwoorden, cookies enz.
- Extra beveiligings opties

Vanaf welke versies firefox zijn deze hier op gebaseerd?

Als ik het goed hebben zullen Firefox 0.9 en Firefox 1.0 op 1.7 zijn gebaseerd, dus waarschijnlijk zijn de nightlies ook (zo snel 'mogelijk') op 1.7 gebaseerd.

Ik had het over nightlies van FireFox. Aangezien FireFox 1.0 op Mozilla 1.7 gebaseerd wordt is het onlogisch om nighlies van FireFox op 1.8 te baseren (er wordt dan ook 'gewoon' 'gebranched').

De nightly builds(NB) zijn een weerspiegeling van de huidige ontwikkeling op dit moment is men bezig men het klaarstomen van 1.7 dus bevatten de NBs de functionaliteit van 1.7

Zodra 1.7 uit is zullen de NBs verder bijgewerkt worden en de (komende) functionaliteit voor versie 1.8 gaan bevatten...

Hoe meer opties is niet altijd beter.. krijg je MS praktijken dat je 1000 van de functies niet gebruikt.

Firefox werkt prima zo.

Op zich is extra functionaliteit niet erg, als het maar niet tenkoste van de veiligheid, stabiliteit en snelheid gaat.
