Software-update: K-Lite Codec Pack 10.9.5

Versie 10.9.5 van K-Lite Codec Pack is uitgekomen. Net zoals drivers nodig zijn om hardware goed te laten werken, hebben audio- en videobestanden iets nodig om goed afgespeeld te kunnen worden. De een zweert bij een mediaspeler die het intern oplost, zoals VLC Media Player of Light Alloy, de ander bij een los filterpakket zoals LAV. Het is ook mogelijk om losse codecs te installeren, zoals de K-Lite Codec Pack. Deze is verkrijgbaar in de smaken Basic, Standard, Full en Mega. De eerste bevat alleen het meest noodzakelijke om bestanden te kunnen afspelen. De Standard-editie bevat ook Media Player Classic - Home Cinema en kan beter overweg met dvd's. Full en Mega ten slotte, bevatten nog meer codecs en maken het bijvoorbeeld ook mogelijk om zelf bestanden te coderen. In deze release zijn de volgende veranderingen aangebracht:

• TrueHD audio. This solves an issue with streams that contain a Dolby Atmos substream.

K-lite bevat naast 32-bit codecs en een 32-bit speler, ook 64-bit codecs en een 64 bit speler. Gebruik van de 64-bit MPC-HC versie is sterk aanbevolen indien je bestanden afspeelt met nieuwere codecs, zoals HEVC (ook wel H.265 genoemd) of VP9. Dit om performance redenen. Voor het afspelen van HEVC of VP9 heb je een stevige processor nodig, en de 64-bit codecs presteren tot wel 100% beter.

Laat ik het eens in de praktijk testen. Testbestand: een 4K video, HEVC, 25 fps. Testcomputer bevat een Intel Core i5-4590 en een Geforce GTX 970. De GTX 970 heeft geen decoder voor HEVC aan boord, hardwareversnelling is dus niet beschikbaar.
MPC-HC 32 bits: speelt de video vloeiend af, processorgebruik ligt tussen de 50% en de 95%, gemiddeld zo'n 85%.
MPC-HC 64 bits: speelt de video vloeiend af, processorgebruik ligt tussen de 30% en de 60%, gemiddeld zo'n 45%.

MPC-HC 64 bits belast de processor gemiddeld zo'n 45%, MPC-HC 32 bits belast gemiddeld zo'n 85%. De 64-bits speler met 64-bits codec presteert bijna twee keer zo goed bij dit testbestand.

The 64-bit codecs have better performance. For common formats such as H.264 video, the difference is relatively small, about 10%. For newer formats such as HEVC and VP9 video the difference is much larger, up to 100%. So it can be beneficial to use a 64-bit player.

Wat ze vooral zeggen ten opzichte van VLC ben ik dan wel weer geïnteresseerd in:

• You get better video quality when you use MPC-HC in combination with madVR (an advanced video renderer).
• The pack provides additional functionality that is not directly related to playback. For example video thumbnail generation in Windows Explorer, and display of MKV file properties in Windows Explorer.
• The pack provides additional hardware acceleration options: NVIDIA CUVID and Intel QuickSync.
• Better support for MKV files.
• Better performance for rendering SSA/ASS subtitles.
• MPC-HC loads much faster than VLC.
• MPC-HC provides a better user interface (in our opinion).
• Codecs are available to other applications.

Verder moet ik zeggen VLC is well lekker makkelijk, maar het is inderdaad zowel met starten en het afspelen beduidend trager. Daarbij is vooral font cache opbouwen is me soms doorn in het oog.

En als ik weer meer met video bewerking ga doen installeer ik waarschijnlijk acute de K-lite codec pack alleen all voor de video encoder codecs.

Ik heb ook even VLC gebruikt, maar dit werkte niet lekker soepel en niet zo basic als MPC-HC. Ook zag het beeld er minder goed uit. Dit was in 2011 ongeveer, dus geen idee hoe het vergelijk nu is. Maar ik zit al jaren met MPC-HC te kijken, en sinds een half jaar op een beamer. Het scherm en audio-doorgifte is subliem. De interface is lekker ouderwets en standaard. Ik download voornamelijk MKV's en Bluray ISO's, liefst met DTS/DTS-HD.

Snap nog steeds niet waarom je zoiets zou installaren zoals K-lite en dan alsnog mpc-hc gebruiken..

Installeer gewoon mpc-hc en klaar? Ben jeiemand die echt madVR wil gebruiken (wat een goed idee is ) dan installeer je dat, maar mpc-hc kan er zo out of the box gebruik van maken. De CUVID en QuickSync opties zittein in LAVFilters, dus ook al in de normale mpc-hc.

Als je de codecs ergens anders wil gebruiken installeer je LAVFilters standalone. Het enige wat k-lite mee installeert zijn dingen zoals de Windows Explorer thumbnail generator en mkv properties en zo.. en eerlijk gezegd is de thumbnail generator altijd het eerste wat ik uit Windows sloop na een verse installatie .

Lijkt er altijd beetje op dat zo'n codec pack er vandoor gaat met de credit van mpc-hc / madVR. Gelukkig zijn het niet meer zulke rampen installers zoals eerst dat ze er gewoon een grote codec-dll-hell van maken

Dus voor mense die altijd VLC hebben gepakt vanwege het 'een simpele standalone simpele download' principe, gewoon mpc-hc installer pakken en klaar, en later madVR eens uitproberen if you're intrigued.

De standaard versie is in feite inderdaad gewoon MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR. Plus een paar kleine extras zoals thumbnails.

Het grote voordeel ten opzichte van die paar dingen los installeren is het gemak. Een installer die alles regelt, en dus ook maar een ding die je up-to-date hoeft te houden.

Heb je hier nou ook iets aan als je bijna alleen Youtube en andere internet video's bekijkt op de PC en some een gedownloade HD film of is dit iets wat alleen interessant is voor mensen die video editen of 4K bestanden kijkt en dat soort dingen?

K-lite standard pack is ideaal voor mensen die soms een gedownloade HD film bekijken. Al kun je ook overwegen om gewoon los MPC-HC 64 bits te installeren, die kan het meeste ook afspelen zonder K-lite te hoeven installeren.

Sommige filmpjes die ik wel eens op dumpert, YouTube of Tweakers voorbij zie komen schokken/stotteren, de één erger dan de ander. Kan dit hiermee ook verholpen worden of ligt dat gewoon aan het filmpje zelf?
Hardware versnelling van flashplayer aan of uit helpt iig niet.
En aan de hardware van mijn PC zou het ook niet moeten liggen.

Kun je een linkje geven van een video die stottert? En wat zijn je PC specs en welke browser gebruik je?

Bijvoorbeeld dit gehele filmpje ook al is het maar 720p en het valt vaak op bij filmpjes waarin het beeld langzaam van links naar rechts of van boven naar beneden gaat en andersom natuurlijk.
Fullscreen en 1080p filmpjes lijken er het meeste last van te hebben.

Ik heb een vergelijkbare computer. Ook een Core i5, ook een GTX 970, ook een MX 100 512 GB. Het filmpje waar je naar linkt speelt hier prima af zonder stotteren. Zowel in Chrome als in Firefox en IE.

Heb je al een andere browser geprobeerd? PC gescand op malware zoals bitcoinminers? Geprobeerd met alle ad-ons uitgezet? Alle drivers van de PC bijgewerkt?
