Software-update: The Bat! 5.8

Ritlabs heeft versie 5.8 van zijn e-mailprogramma The Bat! uitgebracht. Het programma biedt ondersteuning voor verschillende pop3- en imap4-accounts, en heeft een Bayesiaans spamfilter en uitgebreide zoek- en filtermogelijkheden. The Bat! is verkrijgbaar in de smaken Home en Professional Edition, waarbij studenten en non-profitorganisaties korting op de aanschafprijs krijgen. Thuisgebruikers moeten zoals gebruikelijk ook hun International Pack bijwerken. Het verschil tussen de Pro- en Home-edities wordt op deze pagina uit de doeken gedaan. Voor de grote sprong in versienummer is het changelog opmerkelijk kort.

The developers have made considerable changes in the program source
code.
Though these changes are not visible to the users they have a huge
influence on The Bat! performance.

en dat in 8 dagen, grootse prestatie.
Durf het geen oplichters te noemen.

Nadat ik TheBat had meegedeeld dat het toch wel bijzonder vreemd was dat er zo'n sprong gemaakt wordt, en dat het einde van de licencies wel snel bereikt zou zijn kreeg ik het volgende antwoord

Sorry, but when I informed you about the considerable changes, I
meant The Bat! version 6, not The Bat! 5.8.

Since September 26th, the buyers of The Bat! version 5 licences will
get their licences also valid for version 6, i.e. through v6.xx up to
v7.0.99; however, these keys will not work for versions prior to 5.8
due to technical reasons.

That's why the version number has moved from 5.4.8 to 5.8.

Once in 2 years the new major The Bat! version has been released.
The Bat! version 6 will be released within a month. The developers
have been working on it for more than a year. The development is being
done in a separate branch of code (not interdepending), while latest
version 5 releases mostly deal with bugfixing.

So the version move from 5.4.8 to 5.8 was intended to denote that this
version is one of last in v5 line.

Staat dus niet op de website, maar maakt het meer acceptabel.

Wow, van 5.4.8 naar 5.8 is wel een hele grote stap voor 1 bug fix. Willen ze snel versie 6.0.99 passeren vraag ik me dan af.
