Software-update: DC++ 0.780

Versie 0.780, een onstabiele versie, van het p2p-programma DC++ is uitgekomen. DC++ is een van de vele programma's om bestanden via het Direct Connect-netwerk uit te wisselen. Het programma dankt de twee plussen in zijn naam aan C++, waarin het is geschreven. Het pakket wordt door Jacek Sieka ontwikkeld en is een opensourcevariant van de originele Neomodus Direct Connect-client. In deze release zijn de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen aangebracht:

Zoals wel meer mensen gebruik ik dit programma niet meer om te downloaden, daar heb ik torrents voor, maar is het nog wel ideaal voor leechen op LANs.

Grote nadeel vind ik de hubs met belachelijke eisen en voordat je een gevonden hebt die wat fijn werkt ben je wel even verder. Het meerendeel van de hubs waar ik (vroeger) op kwam zat vol met hufters die zich nogal elitair gedroegen en eisten dat je belachelijk veel data sharede. Ik wis nou eenmaal films die ik gekeken heb, dus veel data heb ik niet.

Grote voordeel vind ik dan weer dat de zoekfunctie prima werkt. Vooral op een LAN snel resultaat (door lokale hub) en duidelijk overzicht, waardoor je snel de files binnen kon leechen die je nodig hebt.

Tegenwoordig gebruik ik het niet meer, omdat het internet snel genoeg is om alles te downloaden. Het leechen van xx GB van een seizoen van een serie is leuk, maar als ik 'm echt wil kan ik het net zo goed via internet. Dan download ik alsnog sneller dan ik het kan kijken.

Hoe DC++ tegenwoordig is via internet zou ik niet weten, ik hoop op wat aanvullende reacties daarover.

DC wordt nog veel gebruikt door private hubs, vaak in combinatie met stunnel om het verkeer te versleutelen. StrongDC en CZDC zijn ook populaire clients op dergelijke hubs.

De combinatie van chat en file-sharing die DC biedt is ideaal. De belachelijke eisen bestaan daar ook wel, maar dan kies je er bewust voor en wordt de moeite vaak beloond door de hogere kwaliteit.

Blijft een zeer handige methode voor directe connecties tussen zeer snelle (bijvoorbeeld alleen glasvezel) connecties. Haalt zeer hoge snelheden en is erg overzichtelijk. Qua eisen van hubs is het eigenlijk niet anders dan private torrents.

Ze zijn bij DC++ weer goed bezig aan de lijst met verbeteringen te zien. Na jaren van aankloten met versies die bugs van de vorige versie steeds weer moesten verhelpen en zelf weer andere hadden (na 0.674) hebben ze de boel sinds 0.75 weer goed op de rails.

Is inderdaad erg handig programma voor op LAN's. Elk jaar hier op school gebruiken we dit ook. Alleen jammer is dat deze versie geen multicore ondersteuning heeft. Daardoor is tegenwoordig bij het hashen van de data eerder de CPU de bottleneck dan de HDD wanneer je wat nieuwere/snelle SATA schijven hebt (of SSD natuurlijk)

Just a day after the release of DC++ 0.780, a new version with a couple of quick fixes is out. A compatibility issue with non-DC++ based clients in ADC hubs and a stability problem in shut down process of the client are the reasons of this fast update. Upgrade is recommended for everyone who are already using 0.780…
