Software-update: VirtualBox 2.2.4

Sun Microsystems heeft vrijdag versie 2.2.4 van VirtualBox uitgebracht. Dit programma kan worden gebruikt om een ander besturingssysteem in een virtuele omgeving te installeren. Op die manier is het bijvoorbeeld mogelijk om applicaties in meerdere omgevingen te testen, zonder dat hiervoor specifieke hardware moet worden aangeschaft. VirtualBox is beschikbaar voor Windows 2000 en hoger, Mac OS X, Linux en Solaris, en kan overweg met een groot aantal gastbesturingssystemen.

De software is in twee versies verkrijgbaar. De volledige versie heeft meer functionaliteit, zoals ondersteuning voor usb-poorten en het remote display-protocol, maar is alleen gratis voor privé-gebruik en voor evaluatiedoeleinden. Deze extra functionaliteit is namelijk closed source en ontbreekt in de andere versie, de opensource-uitvoering. Versie 2.2.4 is een zogenaamde maintenance release en bevat voornamelijk veranderingen die een gunstige invloed op zowel de stabiliteit als performance hebben:

Lijkt me leuk nooit gebruikt maar wil er mee spelen. Dan heb ik de volgende vraag.

Kan het werken op men vista 64bit als main OS en Unix (CentOS) als Guest.

Want kan het niet echt vinden op hun site of wiki of ik lees er helemaal overheen wel iets dat je 64bit guest kan gebruiken.

En hoe zit het bijv met gamen heeft iemand daar wat info over bijv geluidskaarten etc.

Sinds 1.6.0 kan je al 64 bits Guests gebruiken. Check de handleiding voor wat je nodig hebt, want het kan niet met elk systeem. Je moet namelijk hardware virtualizatie hebben.

Voor spelletjes kan je het beste even op het forum van VB kijken, daar staat welke er wel werken. Spellen die DirectX nodig hebben zullen over het algemeen niet werken. Er is optie om Wine3D te installeren en het dan te spelen, maar heel vaak werkt het gewoon niet. Alleen OpenGL wordt ondersteund voor video acceleratie.

Geluidskaart is een AC'97 kaart die gebruikt wordt. Voor oudere systemen zoals DOS en Win9x kan je SoundBlaster 16 gebruiken.

Heb al veel verschillende guests gehad op m'n bak met Vista x64. Van Linux tot Windows tot BSD, in de smaken 32 en 64 bits. Geen enkele problemen mee ondervonden.

Momenteel ondersteund virtualbox opengl, je kan bijvoorbeeld met een windows host linux perfect draaien met compiz. En heb onder een linux host met windows xp client Quake 3 getest en draaide vrij redelijk.

Er zijn idd plannen om directx te ondersteunen, maar er is nog geen datum bekend wanneer dit wordt gerealiseerd.

Kleine tip voor VB op Mac om 2x downloaden te besparen:
VirtualBox geeft zelf aan dat er een nieuwe versie is, en kan deze downloaden. Ik heb op dit moment 2.1.4, maar hij downloade versie 2.2.2, en niet 2.2.4.
Je kan 'm dus beter zelf binnen halen. Misschien geldt dit ook voor andere versies.

Wat bedoel je? Je kan al gewoon VB draaien op 64 bit Hosts, en 3D is er ook in de vorm van OpenGL.

Dat is nieuw voor mij. Op het forum is dat niet genoemd. Heb je ergens bewijs dat het niet werkt? Dit is wat de Manual zegt over 3D:

This works for all supported host platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris), provided that your host operating system can make use of your accelerated 3D hardware in the first place.
The 3D acceleration currently has the following preconditions:
1. It is only available for certain Windows, Linux and Solaris guests. In particular:

• For Windows guests, support is restricted to 32-bit versions of XP and Vista. Only OpenGL acceleration is presently available in the guests listed above; Direct3D is not yet supported and will be added in a future release.

Het is dus voor 32 bit Guests in het geval van Windows. Niets over dat je Host 32 bit moet zijn.

Verschillende problemen hier met deze versie

Windows vista premium bsod random, reden blijkbaar Virtualbox driver (staat in dmp)
ook problemen met debian, kernel failures bij opstarten bij verschillende debian os'es

Ik heb net de compact functie geprobeerd, en die werkt warempel! Het werd tijd, mijn vdi was zo'n 19GB groot terwijl er maar een grote 12GB van in gebruik was.

Ik heb al flink lopen zoeken, maar kan dat gewoon in de Virtualbox GUI? Of weet iemand een link waar dat uitgelegd staat?
