Due to the other bus protocol as well as the recently licensed Direct Rambus interface the K7 needs special chip sets and boards. Both should be shipped at the same time as the processor chip. AMD hopes that at the end of 1999 the new fab in Dresden will be ready to shrink the processor to 0,18 µm allowing clock frequencies to increase up to 800 MHz.
