While not exactly showing off GeForce-level benchmarks, the Viper II is impressive nonetheless, especially when you take into consideration S3's track record for chipsets that perform at a less-than-average level. The Viper II especially shines in multitexture games like Quake III Arena; while playing several deathmatch sessions of the game, we saw that our real-time frame rate counter consistently pegged 100fps.We were surprised to find that Diamond has scaled back its original clock-rate estimates. Gone is the predicted 160-200MHz clock rate of the Savage2000. Instead, the shipping version of the Viper II will operate at 155Mhz at the memory and only 125Mhz at the core, dropping the card's fillrate from 800mp/s to 500mp/s. The good news is that Diamond will be bundling an overclocking utility that'll let users incrementally ratchet up the internal and memory clock speeds up a few notches.
