Intel still has to make an effective response AMD's price challange. I am sure that Intel realizes that they have to beat Athlon pricing at all speeds; so expect yet another un-scheduled price cut by Intel Real Soon Now. Or could they be banking on Coppermine?I expect Intel to introduce a Coppermine 650Mhz for about $550 this month.
AMD is still sitting pretty. They have the hottest x86 chip, and they know it. Looking at the current pricing suggests that AMD is now trying to take the high-end single processor market away from Intel. Just look at the price drop on the K7-700! I wonder what that could mean? Beating Intel on price AND performance is the name of the new game.
We are no longer paying more for an Athlon based system (except at 500Mhz) than for an equivalent clock speed Pentium 3.
All of the other components that go into building a PC would be the same in an Athlon or Pentium 3 based PC the only difference in price will be the cost of the motherboard and CPU.
