If you don't need the blistering speed of a TNT2 Ultra, and are looking for a less expensive card that still performs well, you should consider the Diamond Stealth III S540. It gets good frame rates at resolutions up to 1024x768 and comes with a software DVD decoder. The card overclocks nicely with the addition of a simple 486 fan (I hold it on with two rubber bands); and the overclocking can provide close to a 50% increase in speed at the higher resolutions / color depths.
What can I say about this card?
- Decent 3D performance at a decent price
- Reasonably overclocking-friendly
- Not the ideal Quake II card (decent up to 800x600)What can be improved?
- The card should come with a fan
- Better drivers; I am convinced the chip is capable of more
- Working VSync controlIf you want a killer video card (and money is no object) you are better of getting a TNT2 Ultra or wait for the next generation of cards; if you want a good, inexpensive board, you could do a lot worse than get a S540.
