Sharky Extreme Weekly CPU Prices - met Athlon info

Sharky Extreme heeft z'n Weekly CPU Prices column geupdate. Tussen de tekst valt ook nog wat info over de AMD Athlon te ontdekken:

Typically AMD seeks to match or beat the price of whichever Intel CPU they're competing against when their equivalent chip debuts in the market. This is reflected with the current Athlon pricing given out by AMD this week as each of their CPUs is vastly superior in price to the equivalent Intel Pentium III CPUs on the market now.

The reason for the perceived large price discrepancy between Intel and AMD's high-end CPU lines is two-fold. First, AMD is trying to predict where Intel's P3 CPUs will be price-wise in mid-August when the Athlon is available for retail purchase, and is attempting to beat those prices with the Athlon's current pricing levels.

Second, AMD is stacking the PR deck in their favor with the media by debuting their future Athlon prices very early, so that comparisons between it and the Intel P3 line are overwhelmingly in AMD's favor.

A perfect example of this lies in the P3-550 vs. Athlon 550 pricing. In this week's Sharky Extreme Price Guide we see that Intel's P3-550 CPU is priced at approximately $701. Compare this to the Athlon 550's announced price of $479, and you have a $230 price disparity that makes AMD appear to be the consumer's hero.
