C|Net stelt ons ervan op de hoogte van er steeds meer ondersteuning komt voor het Open Mobile Alliance-idee. De alliantie tussen Microsoft en Nokia heeft al een aantal kleinere partijen weten te betrekken in het doel om gestandaardiseerde dataoverdracht tussen mobiele telefoons te promoten. Ook het Mobile Wireless Internet Forum heeft zich nu bij de groep gevoegd, wat inhoudt dat onder andere Intel, Cisco Systems and HP nu bij de alliantie horen. Daarnaast is het Mobile Games Interoperability Forum, bestaande uit onder meer Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia en Siemens, van plan toe te treden. De Open Mobile Alliance pleit voor open standaards, in tegenstelling tot standaards zoals het veelgebruikte CDMA-protocol, waar het bedrijf Qualcomm patent op heeft:
The Open Mobile Alliance itself was created by the merger of two other groups promoting standard ways for cell phones to exchange data such as e-mails: the Open Mobile Architecture initiative, created by Nokia last year, and the more established WAP Forum, of which Microsoft is a member.
Unlike Nokia, which has created more than a dozen different industry alliances to promote open standards, Microsoft rarely joins industry groups. But it joined the Open Mobile Alliance six months ago, with the intention of becoming a driving force behind the group that wants to standardize different areas of wireless data, including mobile Web browsing, messages that contain media attachments, digital rights management, and mobile content downloads, Wehrs said.
