Chris Connolly van GamePC komt met een review van de Yamaha CRW-70 Spyder, een slimline CD-RW drive. Deze externe brander schrijft op 12 speed, herschrijft op 8 speed en leest CD'tjes op 24 speed. De verbinding met je computer verloopt via USB 2.0. De CRW-70 is voorzien van de SafeBurn Buffer Management technologie en een buffer van 8MB om coasters te voorkomen. De opname-tijd wordt verkort door het PurePhase Laser System, welke de verstrooiing van het laserlicht tijdens het branden reduceert. De gemiddelde seektime ligt rond de 150 seconden.
Als het apparaat via USB 2.0 vergeleken wordt met een Plextor IDE brander weet hij een wedstrijdje "wie het eerste klaar is met branden" te winnen. Wordt er echter gekeken naar de leessnelheid, dan is het toch de Plextor die voorop loopt. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:
It's hard not to like the Spyder, in that it uses cool new technology, it's sleek, it's fast, and it just plain looks good. The Spyder without a doubt, puts every other external CD-writer on the market to shame. 12x burning, on the go! How can you go wrong. Yamaha obviously put a lot of thought into the Spyder, and it's certainly paid off. It's a great little drive.
The drive certainly isn't flawless though; there are a few quirks that appeared which we wouldn't mind being dealt with. We'd like to see a better disc eject system, as the current one can be pretty frustrating at times, when a disc is in the drive and you just can't open the drive to get to it!
It would also be very cool if they were to outfit the drives with a rechargeable battery of some sort, so the drive could double as a Discman with mp3 CD's on the road. The drive is certainly small enough for traveling, but carrying the power pack along side just doesn't scream portability.
