With the CRW3200E, Yamaha has proven that just because a drive uses P-CAV writing technology, it does not mean it's going to be slow. Even though the difference is only a few seconds, the CRW3200E is the fastest 24x writer around. However, the new drive from Yamaha is not only a good writer, but is also very good at reading CD's. It joins the Sony CRX175 and AOpen CRW2440 as one of very few 24x writers that can read CD-RW discs as fast as other types of media. The DAE performance was also very good. It even handled scratched and dirty discs fairly well.
The CRW3200 isn't just about raw performance. This drive is packed full of features. Its SafeBurn recording protection system features very good buffer underrun protection in the form of Oak Technology's ExacLink, as well as an 8mb buffer. The Optimum Write Speed Control is great for anyone that wants to pop in any CD-R disc and not have to worry what its rated at. Yamaha's drive will detect the media's optimal speed and write at that, guaranteeing your data will be readable when your writing session is over.
[...]So is the Yamaha CRW3200E for you? If you want the best all around performance and the most features you can buy, this drive is it. Like usual, performance like this coupled with these features doesn't come cheap. The Yamaha CRW3200E comes with a $200 price tag which makes it even more expensive than the Plextor PX-W2410TA. Of course if you're looking for the best, you're probably willing to pay the price too. In any case, the CRW3200 has found a permanent home in my computer.
