I went into this review expecting to see just another Sanyo BP1500 clone with a new bezel and an ASUS logo. I was surprised to find the ASUS CRW-2410S to be anything but that. The Sanyo BP1500 was the first 24x drive on the market, and with new firmware updates it has turned into a very reliable drive. The one weakness with this drive was that its average writing speeds were a little slower than some of the newer 24x drives. ASUS has done away with this by developing their own Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. If you have media that can handle it, the drive has writing times comparable to Lite-On's 24x drive. When the drive detects media that cannot handle these speeds it does not drop the writing speed down to 20x like other drives do. ASUS's AI technology instead shifts the places where the speeds change. This still guarantees good writing quality, but at the same time gives the drive very good writing times.
[...]No drive is ever perfect. And in this case there were a few things that stuck out. While I was impressed with the innovation and performance of ASUS's AI technology, I did have a hard time finding media that would write at the drive's maximum speeds. As it is, the only media I found to work was the 12x and 24x media from Ricoh. Hopefully future firmware updates will allow other media rated at 24x to take advantage of these writing speeds.Highs:
- Very good data transfers with pressed and CD-R media
- Excellent DAE performance.
- Features Sanyo's BURN-Proof technology to prevent coasters.
- Features Sanyo's new FlexSS-BP technology to give users more flexibility when recording.
- Features ASUS's Artificial Intelligence technology to change zone positions.
- Includes Ahead Software's Nero Burning Rom 5.5.
Lows:
- Only supports only PIO Mode 4. Does not support UDMA 33.
- Does not read CD-RW media as fast as pressed or CD-R media.
- Fairly loud when reading and writing CD's.
- Cannot select a 20x writing speed.
- ASUS's AI technology can be picky about what media will write at maximum speeds.
