ITworld heeft eens een blik geworpen op Borland's ontwikkelomgeving Kylix en daar dit verhaal omheen geschreven. Kylix is ruwweg te omschrijven als Delphi voor Linux, en daarmee tegelijk Borland's antwoord op Visual Basic. Borland afficheert Kylix dan ook voornamelijk vanwege de Rapid Application Development (RAD) functionaliteit.
Kylix blijkt - gedeeltelijk - gebruik te maken van WINE-componenten, waar ook de schrijver van het artikel in eerste instantie kennelijk een beetje van schrok: WINE is een Win32-emulator onder Linux die al jaar en dag 'in ontwikkeling' is, maar nog steeds niet geperfectioneerd. Toch blijkt Kylix het goed te doen: de schrijver lijkt er inmiddels in ieder geval geen afstand meer van te willen doen. Zoals alle software heeft ook Kylix nog wat tijd nodig om te 'rijpen' maar de eerste indrukken zijn in ieder geval prima, ondanks de stevige prijs van $1999 voor een volledige licentie:
The first time I ran Kylix, it crashed on me. I thought it was an odd crash that displayed a call to an undefined region. I loaded Kylix on my laptop and the laptop produced the same error. The second time I ran Kylix, it ran without any problems.
The original crash caused me to wonder if Kylix was ready for prime time. The use of WINE in other projects has not necessarily led to success (think WordPerfect). However, except for a little bit of latency in certain tasks, I have not noticed any outstanding issues that would stop me from using Kylix in major development projects.
At $1,999 for the server edition, the cost of Kylix might be a shocker to some. You might really start to wonder if you are better off using KDevelop with C++ or BlackAdder with Python.
All in all, I am not disappointed with Kylix. Yes, the use of WINE could make you worry about stability, but it appears that Borland has a solid implementation. And this is Kylix 1.0, after all. Frankly, it is one of the best first releases that I have seen. As Kylix matures, and as more Windows Delphi programmers decide to broaden their markets, Kylix will become an extremely powerful force for Linux.
