This was actually a review of two things: Acer's Seamless Link technology and their CRW1208A drive. Seamless Link has two things going for it that BURN-Proof does not have. The first is that it does not need an additional controller chipset. It is controlled by the firmware and can be easily updated if need be via a firmware update. The other thing is that it does not need the software to support it. Other technologies like BURN-Proof and JustLink need to have the software turn them on. With Seamless Link the coaster protection is always present, even if your software supports it or not. If I was just reviewing the technology I'd give it a perfect 10.
While I see Seamless Link as an improvement over previous technologies, it has been paired up with a lackluster drive. The CRW1208A has some of the best seek times I've seen. The only other drive that comes close is the TEAC CD-W512EB. The drive was also a little faster than the other 12/8/32 drives we've tested when reading CD-RW media and it's DAE was a little faster when reading pressed audio disks. Unfortunately these were the only times when the drive stood out. Where the CRW1208A's DAE was faster when using pressed media, it was locked at only 8x when reading CD-R media. For the rest of our read and write tests, the Acer came in last. It had slower transfer rates, higher CPU usage and overall took longer than the competition to write our test data.Highs:
- Seamless Link is a great alternative to other buffer underrun protection technologies.
- Great seek times.
- Low priced.
Lows:
- DAE with CD-R media was locked at only 8x.
- Only features 8x high speed rewrite. Most new 12x drives are at 10x these days.
- Slower than average read and write speeds.
- High CPU usage.
