In any case, the actual installation of the router on our network was effortless. We unpacked the router from the box, plugged it in, and got the router sharing our broadband internet connection in a mere 40 seconds. A handy feature that seems to be absent in many routers is the built in switch. The RT314 came complete with a 4-port switch that will allow users to share an Internet connection with up to 4 computers. On our network we had 7 computers so we had an additional switch hooked to the 100Mbps switch on the router. Once the router is plugged in and working on the network, administrators can login and edit settings depending on the desired performance they demand of the router.
The RT314 comes with two ways to edit router operations. The first is the web interface, which most users will end up using. The web interface allows administrators to edit system functions via a browser on a terminal computer. This method will be in favors with most users because it contains a web wizard that guides users through the detection of ISP settings without all the fuss of having to go the advanced route. Another notable feature in the web interface is the ability to view network status. The network status window gives administrators info about total packets sent/received and uptime, but we did hope for some more info about router operations in the web interface. It's safe to say the network status window could have been beefed up a little more with more information but you can get more information in the telnet session if you so desire.
On the more advanced side, the RT314 router allows users(via telnet) to alter a wide array of features in order customize the router to their liking. The telnet menu allows users to change features such as node setup, static routing, adding filters, and SUA or NAT setup. These are features that we will discuss in greater detail in the next session. All in all, there are 24 main areas where advanced users can alter router settings to better suite their needs.
