Software-update: Android-x86 7.1-r1

Het Android-x86 project richt zich op het porten van Android naar het x86-platform. Daarbij emuleert het geen Android zoals BlueStacks App Player, Nox App Player en Genymotion wel doen. De ontwikkelaars hebben Android-x86 7.1-r1 uitgebracht gebaseerd op Android 7.1 Nougat. Nougat versie 7.1 werd uitgebracht in oktober 2016 en het heeft dan blijkbaar even geduurd voordat deze stabiel gekregen is op het x86-platform. De beknopte aankondiging van de Android-x86 7.1-r1 uitgave ziet er als volgt uit:

Key Features
The 7.1-r1 release is based on the latest Android Nougat-MR2 release (7.1.2_r36). We have fixed most issues found in the since 7.1-rc2 and added more features:

• Android-x86 installer was improved a lot including:
  • Create EFI boot entry to efibootmgr.
  • Add auto-installation function which is useful to install Android-x86 as the only one OS.
  • Provide more information on disk and partition selection menu.
  • Add advanced options to provide more boot options.
  • Save the last choice in grub2 menu.
• Update kernel to the LTS kernel 4.9.80 with more patches from AOSP.
• Add a new HAL for iio type sensors.
• Show poweroff menu by ctrl-alt-del.
• Fix a lot of bugs.

Except the traditional ISO files, we also package android-x86 files into a Linux package rpm. It allows Linux users to easily install the release into an existing Linux device with a standalone ext4 root partition.

Known issues

• Google Play Services crashes sometimes.
• Suspend and resume doesn't work on some devices.

Ik heb dit voor de aardigheid eens geprobeerd in Virtualbox, maar na de installatiewizard gebeurt er helemaal niks. Heb nog geen idee of ik iets fout doe.

Heb je 3d acceleratie aanstaan op de videoadapter?
Er zijn wel wat aanwijzingen voor VirtualBox en VMware, het werkt niet (helemaal) gelijk na het erin plempen van de ISO.
Heb het uiteindelijk zelf werkend gekregen in VMware en toen werkte het vrij soepel.

Heb hem net geïnstalleerd onder VirtualBox en hier werkt het wel. Zorg dat de muis PS/2 emulatie gebruikt, in VBox > Settings > System, anders is deze niet bruikbaar.

Ook wordt Android niet officieel ondersteund, dus geen guest additions. Workarond: schaal het scherm op 120% in VBox > Settings > Video.

Net even een USB key gemaakt en blijkt dat je hem ook als 'LIVECD' kunt gebruiken. Leuk om even op je laptop te testen zonder je Windows installatie meteen te overschrijven!

Getest op een oude Asus K52J laptop en het draait op zich netjes. Alleenn de camera-app crashed. Hij opent wel de webcam maar blijft half transparant op het camerabeeld staan waarna hij vastloopt.

Tevens een 'startbalk met startknop' aanwezig om hem meer als desktop te kunnen gebruiken. Misschien nieuw in 7.1 maar ik heb het nog niet eerder gezien.

Dat startmenu met taakbalk is een losse applicatie, kun je ook op normale Android apparaten installeren. Taskbar heet ie geloof ik, staat ook in de F-Droid store.
Enige wat ze hier hebben gedaan is die app in de standaard image gestopt, werkt wel aardig samen met de losse venster die android nu ondersteunt.
