Software-update: Calibre 2.59

Versie 2.59 van Calibre is uitgekomen. Calibre is een opensource- en crossplatform-e-bookbeheerprogramma. Het kan onder meer alle relevante informatie en kaftafbeeldingen opzoeken, en e-boeken converteren om ze geschikt te maken voor de diverse soorten e-readers. Verder kan het programma kranten, tijdschriften en nieuwsartikelen op basis van rss-feeds omzetten in e-bookformaat. Ook kunnen met Calibre boeken worden aangeschaft bij de bekende webwinkels. Het programma wordt actief ontwikkeld en meestal verschijnt er om de andere week op vrijdag een nieuwe versie. In deze uitgave zijn de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen doorgevoerd:

New Features

• Amazon metadata download: Download the series information when available from amazon.com
• Amazon metadata download: Recognize common patterns of embedding the series name after the title and remove it automatically
• Edit Book: Add support for EPUB 3 to the Table of Contents tool. Now when editing EPUB 3 files using the tool will automatically generate both the EPUB 3 navigation document and the NCX table of contents for backwards compatibility.
• EPUB Input: Implement reading of Table of Contents from EPUB 3 files that do not specify a fallback NCX ToC
• EPUB metadata: When setting a cover image for an EPUB file that has no metadata cover image defined, add the new cover image as a pure metadata cover instead of aborting.

Bug Fixes

• Fix crash on exit if any plugins have loaded code that raises exceptions during shutdown. Closes tickets: 1592414
• Copy to library: Speed up checking for duplicates when copying multiple books to a large library. Closes tickets: 1593027
• Get Books: Update Smashwords plugin for website changes. Closes tickets: 1590653
• Edit Book: Fix a bug in the new text search facility that could cause searches to fail when searching from the current cursor position instead of the top of the file. Closes tickets: 1588778
• Bulk conversion dialog: Fix page margin settings being ignored when converting to DOCX
• Make the default shortcut for remove books Backspace on OS X since many mac keyboards have no delete key and the backspace key is labelled as delete
• Edit Book: Check Book: Do not warn if a cover image is not referenced in the text
• E-book viewer: Fix a bug that could cause incorrect rendering of chapter titles in some rare circumstances.
• Windows console output: Handle consoles with non black and white color scheme correctly
• Fix a regression in 2.57 that caused auto-removal of borders from covers to become much less proficient at detecting borders
• Fix a regression in 2.57 that broke grayscaling of images

Ik gebruik zelf Ubuntu Linux en ik moet zeggen dat het onder Linux vrij eenvoudig is. Je geeft het volgende commando (knip en plak van de Calibre site) in en je hebt de meest recente versie.
Dit commando staat bij mij in de terminal geschiedenis dus erg snel toegepast en geïnstalleerd in mijn situatie.

Zeker niet meer elke vrijdag hoor. Tegenwoordig zit er heel vaak twee weken, en soms zelfs drie weken tussen updates.

Waarom installeren je dan niet gewoon uit de repo? Die versie loopt iets achter, maar dan gaat t gewoon mee met de updates van t systeem.

Hopelijk stapt het calibre team snel over naar een auto updater. Het begint toch wel irritant te worden dat je telkens zelf de files moet gaan downloaden en installeren.

Mis je functies dan? T is zo compleet, kan me haast niet voorstellen dat je de nieuwste steeds moet hebben. Calibre is al jarenlang een topproduct het verbaast me dat de ontwikkeling nog steeds op zo een hoog tempo zit. David zou ook de release cycle kunnen aanpassen zodat er elke maand/kwartaal een Major update komt en werken met weekly builds voor de testers en mensen die niet zonder updates kunnen.

Voor de kobo gebruikers zou de Extended touch plugin wel iets makkelijker te configureren mogen zijn. Ik denk dat veel mensen hierdoor fijne functies missen, zoals het kepub formaat (die houdt je progressie in een boek bij en berekent daarmee de tijd die je nog moet spenderen aan een hoofdstuk of de rest van het boek) en het gebruik van shelves/boekenplanken waarmee je verzamelingen kunt maken waardoor je makkelijker boeken vindt ( zoals series bij elkaar, Nederlands en Engelstalig gescheiden etc )

Het begint toch wel irritant te worden dat mensen blijven zeuren over een auto-updater terwijl dat onderwerp al meerder malen uitentreuren besproken is. Zoek maar even op het forum op Mobileread.com, dan vind je haarfijn uitgelegd waarom die auto-updater er niet is.

En anders maak je die auto-updater toch zelf? Het programma is tenslotte open source. Als je dan ook nog zorgt dat je updater op alle platforms feilloos draait, wordt ie wellicht ook nog eens de eerstvolgende vrijdag opgenomen in de standaardrelease.

De enige reden dat die updater er niet is, ondanks dat dit vrijwel de meest gevraagde feature lijkt te zijn, is omdat men het niet wil. De rest lijken excusses en drogredenen. Een simpele download knop die vanuit de client de nieuwste versie download zonder dat je zelf naar de website moet is echt niet zon ingewikkeld. Je kunt een auto updater natuurlijk zo ingewikkeld of simpel maken als je zelf wilt.

Het antwoord is al vaker gegeven in de afgelopen 7 jaar: Kovid geeft er de voorkeur aan zijn tijd te besteden aan het programma zelf, maar heeft aangegeven dat iemand die zich geroepen voelt best een auto-update module kan maken.

Why doesn’t calibre have an automatic update?¶

For many reasons:
There is no need to update every week. If you are happy with how calibre works turn off the update notification and be on your merry way. Check back to see if you want to update once a year or so. There is a check box to turn off the update notification, on the update notification itself.

Calibre downloads currently use about 100TB of bandwidth a month. Implementing automatic updates would greatly increase that and end up costing thousands of dollars a month, which someone has to pay.
If I implement a dialog that downloads the update and launches it, instead of going to the website as it does now, that would save the most ardent calibre updater, at most five clicks a week. There are far higher priority things to do in calibre development.

If you really, really hate downloading calibre every week but still want to be up to the latest, I encourage you to run from source, which makes updating trivial. Instructions are available.

There are third party automatic updaters for calibre made by calibre users in the calibre forum.

Nou, ik vind het nog steeds een kul reden. Het geld is wellicht een goede reden, maar vervolgens gaat hij toch echt in mijn ogen onderuit door te stellen dat hij belangrijkere dingen wil bouwen voor calibre en zijn tijd niet wil verdoen door een auto update te bouwen.

Nou, wat een fantastische nieuwe features zijn er elke week... epub 3 support voor de inhoudsopgave dit keer, werkelijk fantastisch. Daar had ik net als iedereen hier liever een auto update gezien. En als het geld een probleem is brengt hij maar 1 keer per maand een update uit ipv elke week.

Als geld geen probleem voor jou is dan stel je toch voor dat jij de bandbreedte en serverkosten voor je rekening neemt en in contract opneemt dat je dit altijd zult blijven doen, met redelijke opzegtermijn en dergelinke, en dat de security 100% goed geregeld is op die server zodat er geen malware ingehackt kan worden, dat je 99% uptime biedt, dat je verantwoordelijk gehouden kunt worden als er wel iets ongewenst gebeurt... Betrouwbaar zoiets hosten heeft nog best wat manwerk tot gevolg en ik snap dat je je als developer niet perse op wilt richten. Systeembeheerder != Developer
