Software-update: Pale Moon 20.1

Versie 20.1 van Pale Moon is uitgekomen. Deze webbrowser maakt gebruik van de broncode van Mozilla Firefox, maar is geoptimaliseerd voor moderne hardware. De Windows-versie van Mozilla Firefox wordt namelijk ontwikkeld met een zo groot mogelijke compatibiliteit in gedachten. Mede door concessies aan oudere hardware is de browser niet zo snel als hij zou kunnen zijn, aldus Pale Moon-maker Moonchild Productions.

Pale Moon is functioneel nagenoeg gelijk aan Mozilla Firefox, maar biedt geen ondersteuning voor oudere processors. Ook zijn enkele zaken weggelaten, waaronder 'Accessibility features' en 'Parental controls'. Het resultaat is een browser die soms tot 25 procent beter zou presteren. Daarnaast is er een 64bit-versie van de browser beschikbaar. Meer informatie over het programma kan hier worden gevonden.

De download van Pale Moon is alleen in het Engels, maar met behulp van dit taalbestand en een kleine aanpassing is het programma ook in het Nederlands te gebruiken. Het programma gebruikt zijn eigen profielmap en deelt deze niet met Firefox, waardoor het mogelijk is om de twee naast elkaar te gebruiken. In deze release zijn de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen aangebracht:

Pale Moon 20.1 released!

This is a minor update with a number of security and stability fixes and a few small other changes. Some new features of Firefox 21 have not been ported over to this version by design.

Changes:

• Update of the libpixman graphics library to improve performance for SSE2 CPUs.
• Some improvements are implemented in the optimized code paths for SSE2 instructions in the libpixman library.
• Change to the "Clear download history" setting for use with the panel-based download manager (classic UI unaffected).
• This change makes the UI clearer for privacy settings, to synchronize the setting for history&download in the preferences dialog box when the new download panel is used (since the new panel uses a history list for downloaded files in the library rather than a separate list). For panel downloads, both settings are now linked. For the classic download, a separate choice can be made for history and downloads as before.

New changes in Firefox code not included by design:

• Removal of E4X - Pale Moon will keep this available until the next major release.
• Removal of Places History API for add-ons.
  More add-ons will be able to continue functioning if they make use of these APIs.
• Addition of scoped stylesheet implementation.
  This advocates the use of in-line styling in webpages (using style= parameters on elements instead of using classes and IDs), which is something we have been trying to move away from for some years now! It promotes using messy page code. Let's all keep things clean, shall we?
• Implementation of FHR (Firefox Health Report - advanced usage/app metrics collection and submission).
  Although it would allow users to get a bit more details about what is going on in their browser, the implementation is only partial to begin with, and there's no reason to add a potential privacy issue to Pale Moon in terms of telemetry-under-a-different-name.

• Fix for out-of-bounds read crash in PropertyProvider::GetSpacingInternal (crash fix)
• Fix for out-of-bounds read in gfxSkipCharsIterator::SetOffsets
• Fix for assertion failure in nsUnicharStreamLoader::WriteSegmentFun with ISO-2022-JP
• Fix for crash with inline script in an XML doc (crash fix)
• Fix for "ASSERTION: Out of flow frame doesn't have the expected parent" and crash (crash fix)
• Fix for nsScriptSecurityManager::CheckLoadURIWithPrincipal being broken
• Fix for a problem where the IPC Channel could overwrite the stack
• Fix for Crash in MediaDecoder::UpdatePlaybackOffset (crash fix)
• Fix for Crash [@ nsTextFrame::HasTerminalNewline()] with splitText (crash fix)
• Fix for FTP use-after-free crash (crash fix)

Palemoon leuke browser. Alleen vind ik de nieuwe lay-out van Firefox wel ok, waardoor ik Palemoon een beetje conservatief vind overkomen.
Maar nu de ontwikkeling van Waterfox zo goed als gestagneerd is (laatste versie was 18.1 in januari), is Palemoon het enige serieuze 64bit alternatief wat overblijft.

Ik wil best graag de 64bit versie van Palemoon proberen, maar hiermee kun je alleen niet online tv kijken via UPC (32bit plugin vereist). Daardoor gebruik ik vooral het Aurora kanaal van Firefox. Welke 1 versie voorloopt op het beta kanaal en 1 versie achterloopt op de nightly.
Ik ben bang dat het nog wel even gaat duren voordat 64-bit browsers de standaard worden. Waarschijnlijk gebeurd dit pas wanneer browsers zelf of een plugin meer dan 3GB nodig hebben aan werkgeheugen. Of natuurlijk wanneer het niet meer mogelijk is dat binnen Windows 32bit applicaties gedraaid worden.

Cyberfox is een nieuwe voor mij. Ondersteunt deze ook 64bit? Of is het alleen een 32bit browser?

Waterfox had ik een tijdje geleden nog naast palemoon draaien. Die is nu echter vervangen door cyberfox. Palemoon blijft wij de browser die ik het meest gebruik.

20.0.1 is al uit sinds 11 april of zo. Is dit niet een beetje achter de feiten nahollen?

20.1 != 20.0.1, als je in de updategeschiedenis kijkt zie je ook een meuktracker voor 20.0.1 op 12 april...

Nee hoor het klopt wel.... ze zijn van 20.0.1 naar 20.1 gegaan.
Ik kreeg gisteren zelf de update aangeboden van Pale Moon..
