Via de Xrossmediabar op de PlayStation 3 kun je onder andere content afspelen die via een upnp-av-mediaserver wordt aangeboden. PS3 Media Server is in Java geschreven en kan via upnp-av audiosignalen en videobeelden naar de PlayStation 3 streamen. De software is in staat om onder andere realtime audio en video naar formaten te transcoden die de PS3 kan lezen, en kan ook een foto-feed van bijvoorbeeld Picasaweb doorgeven. De ontwikkelaar heeft een bètaversie uitgebracht met 1.20 build 400 als de exacte versieaanduiding. De bijbehorende lijst met veranderingen ziet er als volgt uit:
