Software-update: Sandboxie 3.32

Afgelopen zondag is versie 3.32 van Sandboxie uitgekomen. Met dit programma is het mogelijk om in Windows andere programma's in een afgeschermde omgeving te laten draaien, wat ontwikkelaars een zandbak noemen. Op die manier kunnen wijziging die door programma's, zoals Internet Explorer, worden gemaakt eenvoudig ongedaan gemaakt worden en is er ook geen risico dat belangrijke onderdelen van het besturingssysteem worden aangetast. Sandboxie wordt door Ronen Tzur ontwikkeld en een levenslange licentie kost 22 euro. Hieronder is te vinden wat er allemaal in versie 3.32 is veranderd:

New features in Sandboxie Control:

• Start/Run Access Restrictions prevent programs from running in the sandbox unless specifically permitted.
• Internet Access settings page revised for greater ease of use.
• Program Settings revised and enhanced with additional options.
• Leader Programs mechanism stops all programs running in the sandbox, as soon as some specific program ends.
• Right-click command "Terminate Program" is more powerful now and can terminate any program running in the sandbox.

New and changed functionality in Sandboxie:

• Explorable ZIP Compressed Folders: Windows Explorer running sandboxed can copy ZIP contents to the clipboard.
• Replaceable Windows DLLs: Installation of a sandboxed program can replace system DLLs inside the sandbox.
• All versions of the .NET Framework (up to 3.5, including Silverlight) can be installed sandboxed.
• Read-only/query-only access to the Windows Management and Instrumentation (WMI / WBEM) service, for sandboxed programs that require it.
• Files created in the sandbox are owned by the "Authenticated Users" group.
• Sandboxie Start Menu starts noticably faster.
• Prevent a sandboxed program from stopping other programs using the EndTask API.
• Prevent a sandboxed program from changing system locale settings.

Fixes and enhancements related to Windows Vista:

• On Windows Vista, Internet Explorer did not always show Immediate Recovery notifications, and this has been fixed.
• On Windows Vista, Sandboxie Control does not run as Administrator when launched at the end of the Sandboxie installation.
• On Windows Vista, a sandboxed Internet Explorer need not be "Run As Administrator" in order to install ActiveX components.
• On Windows Vista, Sandboxie Start Menu can show shortcuts installed into the sandbox under the "All Users" profile.

Enhanced compatibility with third-party software:

• Norton Internet Security 2009
• Recent versions of McAfee Site Advisor
• Improved support for KeyScrambler.
• Web browsers: Google Chrome and K-Meleon.

Is dit niet gewoon het zelfde als een VMware application. Waar je bijvoorbeeld een browser als Firefox in een mini instantie van een virtuweel OS draait? Of zie ik het nu verkeerd?

Wel handig maar in welke catogorie van applicaties hoort dit nu? Een Virtual Machine achtig iets of zijn heel eigen oplossing die op de een of andere manier een OS emuleert?

Als ik bijvoorbeeld een game in een sandbox instaleer, betekend dat dan dat ik de game alleen kan gebruiken binnen deze applicatie en maakt dat de footprint van de dame dan ook groter, je moet immers ook allerlij windows en directX libs etc binnen de sandbox hebben.

nee, enkel zaken die weggeschreven worden naar de HD, het register, ini bestanden etc. worden bijgehouden. Na het stoppen van die zanbak komt alles dus gewoon zoals het was. Practisch geen performance vermindering dus.
Gelijkaardig product is Altiris Software virtualisation. Gratis en maakt het mogelijk installaties ook de exporteren en distribueren.

Het lijkt erop dat Altiris is gefuseerd met Symantec. Je kunt nog wel via ZDnet site een freeware versie downloaden.

Hoe compatible is dit met games die b.v. Securom installeren? Verdwijnt na het stoppen van de sandbox ook de Securom in de zandbak, klaar voor de volgende gamesessie?

Dit is gratis, hij zeurt alleen na x dagen dat je moet kopen en anders 5 sec bij opstarten moet wachten

Note that the PatchGuard used in initial (* see below) versions of Windows x64, specifically Windows XP 64-bit Edition, is less aggressive than the PatchGuard used in Windows Vista x64. For this reason, Sandboxie can and does work in earlier editions of Windows x64.

Summary: The 32-bit edition of Sandboxie can both provide and guarantee software isolation. A 64-bit edition can provide, but cannot guarantee, the same isolation. For this reason, a 64-bit edition of Sandboxie is not offered at all.

* Update
On August 14, 2007, Microsoft has issued Windows Update KB932596 to Windows XP 64-bit which brings the Windows XP PatchGuard up to par with the Windows Vista PatchGuard. Effectively this Windows Update will cause an incompatibility between Sandboxie and Windows XP 64-bit, which will manifest as the occasional system crash. To use Sandboxie on Windows XP 64-bit, you must first remove Windows Update KB932596.

Dus winxp 64 bit kan wel.

jammer dat ik dit nu lees *na* de BSOD die ik kreeg op x64.....
ik hou het wel bij een speciaal hiervoor ingerichte VM voor wat betreft het veilig browsen naar 'sleutels'

ik gebruik dit wel alleen als ik op m'n Windows-pc naar eum 'sleutels' zoek
want je merkt wel dat sommige sites wat trager zijn onder Sandboxie

Vertraagt dit de werking van die software die hij in het oog houdt dan? En belangrijk: wat doet de doel met je CPU, als hij meerdere processen volgt die erg HD-actief op zichzelf zijn?

Merk er niks van. Hij blocked alleen schrijf acties naar je HD zeg maar. Kheb zelf World of Goo gedraaid in de sandbox
