E-mail is tegenwoordig niet meer weg te denken uit de maatschappij en het bedrijfsleven. Een van de grootste problemen, naast natuurlijk het welbekende spam-fenomeen, is hoe de verschillende e-mails die door de jaren heen ontvangen en verstuurd zijn beschikbaar te houden. Bijvoorbeeld om terug te zoeken wat er destijds afgesproken of opgevraagd werd. Het steeds maar blijven uitbreiden van de mailservers zelf is wellicht een mogelijkheid, maar wel een die zeer kostbaar is. Daarom kiest men vaak om 'oude' e-mail op een of andere manier te archiveren in aparte bestanden. Zo biedt Outlook de optie om e-mails op te slaan in pst-bestanden en Lotus Notes gebruikt daarvoor zijn nsf-bestanden. Het nadeel van deze methode is dat de 'oude' e-mail slechts moeilijk te doorzoeken en te benaderen is en mobiele diensten zoals webmail bieden vaak geen toegang tot deze bestanden. Een oplossing hiervoor kan zijn om archiveren niet meer 'client-side' te regelen maar centraal via de mailservers zelf die de 'oude' e-mails archiveren naar goedkopere database- of opslagservers. GFI ontwikkelt hiervoor zijn Mailarchiver-applicatie dat zich richt op omgevingen met Microsoft Exchange 2003 en 2007.
