Software-update: Notepad++ 5.0

Zaterdag is de finalrelease van versie 5.0 van de opensourceteksteditor Notepad++ uitgekomen. Notepad++ is een uitgebreide tekstverwerker met diverse mogelijkheden die met name voor programmeurs handig zijn, zoals syntax highlighting voor onder andere C, C++, Java, html, xml en php en de mogelijkheid om meerdere documenten tegelijkertijd te bewerken, of zelfs één document op twee verschillende plaatsen te onderhouden. In versie 5.0 is onder andere de performance verbeterd. Dit is te zien in het opstarten en met name tijdens het afsluiten van het programma te merken. Verder zijn er calltip hints en 'tags match highlight' toegevoegd, en is het nu ook mogelijk om items aan het contextmenu toe te voegen. Het volledige changelog van deze release ziet er als volgt uit:

Main features added in version 5:

• The performance of Notepad++ v5 is improved - especially on exit.
• Function parameters calltip hint: in a modern IDE, it always comes together with auto-completion. In this version of Notepad++ calltip feature is implemented as extension of auto-completion. All the api files for auto-completion are now under xml format(with extension .xml).
• Tags match highlight: it will be adored by html/xml guys. The colours can be configured in Styler Configurator dialog. Check Preference dialog to disable this feature (through I don't know why you want to do that).
• Enhancement of adding item in context menu: All the plugin commands can be added into context menu. Furthermore adding context menu items in contextMenu.xml is easier in this version. Note that for the sake of backward compatibility, id attribute will still work on the future release.

Fixed bugs and added features (from v4.9.2):

• Improve Notepad++ performance - on startup and on exit.
• Add Calltip capacity.
• Add HTML/XML tag match highlighting.
• All the menu commands can be added in context menu, including plugins' commands, macros and user defined commands.
• Add bookmarked lines operations: delete all marked lines, copy all marked lines into clipboard, cut all marked lines into clipboard, paste from clipboard to replace all marked lines content.
• Add rename and delete current document features.
• Fix crash bug: Open files with date pre-1970.
• Fix clone mode bug: now the actions done in one view will be synchronized in the cloned view.
• Add tooltips in document tab to display the full file name path.
• Change hide lines behaviour: Hide lines now saved during switches.
• Change file history list behaviour: Most recent closed file is on the top. Add number on list.
• Caret width and blink rate are customizable.
• Add asterisk in title bar if file is dirty.
• The bookmarks' look & feel are improved.
• Add "Select all" and "copy" context menu items in Find in files results window.
• Fix goto line with command line bug.
• Improve smart highlight / mark all / incremental search highlight all visibility
• Tabbar's coulours is configurable via Stylers Configurator(Active tab Text, Inactive tab text, Inactive tab background, Active tab focused indicator and Active tab unfocused indicator).
• Add the smart highlight file size limit - 1.5 MB in order to improve the performance.
• Add exception handling (dumping filedata).
• Fix go to line command line bug.
• Enhance Find in files and Find in all opened files features' performance.
• Fix dialog off screen problem under multi-monitor environment.
• Add 2 plugin message for v5:
  • NPPM_GETFULLPATHFROMBUFFERID
  • NPPM_GETPOSFROMBUFFERID.

Kun je met Notepad++ ook direct via de FTP werken? Ik werk nu altijd met Editplus, juist daarom..

ja, met de FtpSynchronize-plugin die er standaard in zit. En dat werkt zeer behoorlijk.

Cool die HTML/XML tag match highlighting, alleen jammer dat het niet helemaal werkt. Hij matcht bij mij niet altijd de juiste tags bij elkaar. Ik heb maar even een bugreport in de tracker gezet.

Let wel op dat HTML tag matching heel erg tricky is; <p> hoeft bijv. geen eind-tag te hebben, maar het kan wel...

<p> hoort formeel wel een eind-tag te hebben, maar browsers accepteren het niet aanwezig zijn van deze eindtag. Concreet veranderd er weinig tot niets aan de pagina layout.

Een <br> tag echter kan wel een stand-alone tag zijn.

Dat is alleen in XHTML. In HTML hoeft dat niet.

Er is niks op tegen dat je <br></br> schrijft als je vanoverbodige code houdt.

Ik vindt dit voor Windows de beste editor die er is. Hij komt bijna in de buurt van Kate en Gedit. Ik kan hem dan ook aan iedereen aanbevelen.

Wat vind je beter aan Kate en Gedit? Ik vind zelf Notepad++ een heerlijke editor, die zich prima kan meten met gedit. Beter als? meh, ieder programma heeft zo zijn voor en nadelen.

Die is toch heel wat uitgebreider.

Het enige wat ik mis, is een column-modus, zoals die in UltraEdit of Crimson Editor. Het werken met kolommen in deze 2 programma's vind ik net ff intuitiever en makkelijker.

Je kan wel met behulp van ALT + SHIFT een kolom selecteren, alleen de invoermodus als in Crimson Editor is niet aanwezig en dat is wel erg jammer...

Wat ik nog altijd mis is een goede regex-ondersteuning; hij begrijpt niet eens de "?" operator...

Probeer het eens met een punt (.) i.p.v. het vraagteken (?) ...

De punt is iets compleet anders:

De regex "koen?" pakt zowel "koe" als "koen", terwijl "koe." bijvoorbeeld "koen" en "koel" pakt, maar niet "koe"!

Het enige dat in de buurt komt is de asterix (*); "koen*" pakt "koe", "koen" en "koennnnnn". Goed genoeg voor heel simpel regex-zoekwerk, maar zodra je wat meer controle nodig hebt kom je nergens.

Werkt Notepad++ inmiddels ook naar behoren voor een 'Restricted User'?

Een aantal maanden geleden heb ik nog eens een 4.x geprobeerd, die last had van het niet mogen schrijven in de configuratie-file in de %ProgramFiles%\Notepad++ directory. Dat er bijna 7 jaar na introductie van Windows XP nog steeds applicaties geschreven worden die verwachten overal schrijfrechten te hebben is mij een raadsel.

Notepad++ kan zijn configuratiebestanden zowel in zijn installatiedirectory als in %APPDATA% opslaan, dit kan je kiezen tijdens de installatie ("Don't use %APPDATA%").

Inderdaad stuk sneller geworden met opstarten/afsluiten, vooral als je veel bestanden open hebt!

Vind het nog steeds raar dat ze ergens de keuze hebben gemaakt de functionlist plugin weg te laten.
