Just a reminder of the main 8.2 improvements over 8.1:
* *drak* tools aren't hiding their work from users anymore! On the contrary, thanks to the 'explanations' concept, each utility shows what it did by writing to a /var/log/explanations. Moreover, MCC lets you monitor the 'explanations' as they are written to the log file (/var/log/explanations).
* Then there is a famous "possibility to export directories using the simple mouse click". Note: This has to be enabled in MCC first!
* "Rescue" mode has improved a lot, and offers a simple menu to aid inexperienced users now. It even got a new "remove LILO from MBR" option last week. Take a look at it, think you'll like it. .-)
* Almost completely rewritten Msec.
* Support for encrypted file systems.
* Really cool "hot-plugging" capabilities thanks to devfs
* "Return of supermount".
Apparently, supermount has evolved to a "rock solid" state, and except the current RC1 bug that is fixed in cooker, reports we got so far turned out to be false alerts.
* Hardware support for tons of new stuff. In particular, addition of the brand-new support for several new classes of devices: scanners, TV-cards, and HPs multi-function devices (scanner/printer).
What's not?
This will not be the final, and one reason is partly because we enter in a period when correcting a bug may lead to create new ones, and also because there are remaining ones, of course:
* Supermount: symlinks on removable media still put supermount in troubles, not that it crashes or something, just that it cannot understand them. This problem is fixed in cooker with the latest kernel.
* USB: new kernel is USB 2.0 aware as you may already know, however some glitches with USB 1.0 has been found. As a consequence if you encounter some strange detection problem, or undetected devices, especially if you are using an USB hub with a lot of devices, the guilty program may be /usr/sbin/usbmodules. Try to remove it and see what happen (and by the way, we are interested in the result, as we do not have all the available USB stuff, we are not sure yet what could be the real consequences of this removing).
