Waar we een halfjaar hebben moeten wachten op een nieuwe bètaversie, is het meer dan een jaar geleden dat een nieuwe stabiele versie van Audacity het levenslicht gezien heeft. Audacity is een multi-platform opensource audio-editor. Het kan audio opnemen, bewerken en opslaan in wav-, aiff-, ogg- en mp3-formaat. Het heeft een groot aantal effecten standaard aan boord, waaronder fade-in en fade-out, echo, tempo veranderen en noise removal, en vanwege de ondersteuning voor zowel VST als LADSPA plug-ins is dit eenvoudig verder uit te breiden. Versie 1.2.6 wordt geleverd met de volgende release notes:

- Audacity can import and display MIDI files, but cannot play or edit them.
- Linux: Recording in full duplex (playing existing tracks while recording) on some systems causes mono recordings to sound distorted or low-pitched. To work around this problem, set Audacity to record in stereo.
- MacOS X: Audacity cannot work with files or folders that are contained inside folders with non-English characters (accents, symbols, etc.) in their names. Files with accented characters work, and Audacity projects with accented characters work. Only folders with accented characters in their names will cause problems.
