Voor het verkleinen van bestanden om deze op te slaan of te versturen via het internet worden verschillende compressieformaten gebruikt, zoals arj, rar, zip en 7z. Pea is een relatief onbekend compressieformaat, dat zich voornamelijk richt op de veiligheid van de data. Het gebruikt bijvoorbeeld een flexibele integrity check en kan gebruikmaken van zowel een passphrase als een keyfile om de opgeslagen data uit te lezen. Meer informatie over het pea-formaat kan in deze pdf gevonden worden. PeaZip is het programma dat gebruikt kan worden voor het maken en lezen van een pea-bestand op Linux- en Windows-systemen. Daarnaast ondersteunt het ook verschillende andere compressieformaten door gebruik te maken van 7-Zip, PAQ8, Strip, UPX en QUAD. De ontwikkelaars hebben PeaZip 1.9 uitgebracht en voorzien van de volgende veranderingen:

- Added quick selection between favourite formats as customizable popup menu
- Last used compression method is saved in details to defaults (for 7z binary, .7z and .zip formats)
- 'Compress files open for writing' saved to conf (all formats supported through 7z binary)
- 'Encrypt filenames' function (.7z format) saved to conf
