Misschien geen hot news, maar ik heb op het forum gezien dat er redelijk veel mensen zijn die een scsi kaart hebben met een chip van het type Symbios Logic 53C810. Hoewel mijn exemplaar (een Asus SC200) op een ASUS TX97 geen problemen had, dacht ie daar op een Abit BH6 wel "iets" anders over onder NT. Het blijkt nl dat er een grove fout zit in het "symc810.sys" bestandje van Service Pack 4. (ja, weer SP4) Zodra je dus SP4 installeert heb je een GROOT probleem: Blue Screen of Death.

1) The system contains an NCRC810 device (part number 609-0391399). The Symbios driver in SP4 performs operations that can potentially trigger errata in the 810 device, resulting in a blue screen. Most systems with this 810 device will function normally with the SP4 driver. However, on some systems the interaction between the 810 and the PCI chipset triggers the errata and blue screen. Systems that have been identified with this problem are some DEC Alpha systems based on Gamma and Sable platforms and some older DELL systems with the 810 device (either on the motherboard or a plug-in card). Workaround: The only workaround is to replace the SP4 version of symc810.sys with the original NT 4.0 version. 2) The system contains a Symbios host adapter based on the 810, 815, 825/825A, 860, or 875 devices. Another vendor’s device driver (loading after the Symbios driver) snoops the PCI config space of the Symbios device, reading past offset 0x80. This actually reads the operating registers of the 8XX device and causes an internal data bus error in the device. The device reports this error as a SCSI bus parity error, even though no SCSI activity is on the bus. With the SP4 bundled Symbios driver, this erroneous parity error causes a blue screen. Workarounds: Option 1: Replace the SP4 version of symc810.sys with the original NT 4.0 version. Option 2: Obtain the latest Symbios NT driver for 810 thru 895 devices from the Symbios web site (www.symbios.com). Copy the symc8xx.sys file to a temporary location, rename the file symc810.sys, then copy the renamed file over the SP4 version of symc810.sys. Later versions of the Symbios symc8xx.sys driver contain a workaround which prevents the blue screen in this situation.

Apple Computer this week is expected to put the popular multimedia software in the open source domain, as it recently did with portions of the Mac OS X operating system, industry sources said. QuickTime 4.0 offers the ability to do live streaming, which allows content to be played while it is being downloaded, instead of making users wait until the transfer has finished. Because the company is making parts of the technology available in the so-called open-source arena, the server version of the software that sends data to a user's computer can be modified to run on Windows NT and Unix servers, as well as on the Macintosh.

Sorry but I just got a bug report from someone on the newsgroup and I've created a new version of the Voodoo3 Overclocker. It's a very minor deal since it's only a spelling error :/ but I don't want my work looking like crap either. Jeez I guess I should really look at what I'm shipping... Linuxworld heeft een review van Caldera OpenLinux, dat met z'n gebruiksvriendelijke installatie en interface vooral voor nieuwe gebruikers en corporate users aan zal spreken:

The Linux-based installation program is entirely graphical, and it's easy as pie. Once you get the first few configuration details out of the way and choose an installation set (minimal, default, default with commercial applications, or custom), it begins installing the packages in the background while it steps you through the final installation questions.

If you answer all the questions before the background installation process is finished, it drops you into a game of Tetris. That's right, Tetris. It keeps you occupied while you wait for the remaining packages to be installed.

The background installation and Tetris feature is a brilliant idea. I chose the largest installation: default plus commercial applications. Yet the background installation went so quickly that I was only able to complete a single round of Tetris before the installation finished. Then again, I am a really good Tetris player, so your mileage may vary.

Thetechzone.com heeft een review gepost van Intel's nieuwe 466MHz Celeron. Natuurlijk is dit gewoon weer een Celeron op een iets hogere snelheid, waar weinig nieuws over te vertellen valt. Wat overblijft is z'n overklokbaarheid. Hoe zit het daarmee (7x75 lijkt realisatisch):

The C466's 7X multiplier pretty much rules out the 83 and 100Mhz bus speed. However, the 75x7 for 525Mhz is pretty appealing. We wanted to use the new Global CPM25603-12 heatsink on this Celeron, but they're not for sale yet. We would have to make due with the stock heatsink fan for now. Here are the results of our overclocking test. 7 x 66MHz = 466 MHz - 100% Stable (No kidding) 7 x 68MHz = 476 MHz - 100% Stable @ 2.0V 7 x 75MHz = 525 MHz - 100% Stable @ 2.0V!!!!!! 7 x 83MHz = 580 MHz - POST, locks up at Windows splash screen 7 x 100MHz = 700 MHz - Blank screen Let me tell you we are really really excited here. With just a stock heatsink fan, we had our Celeron 466 running at a whoppin' 525Mhz at 2.0V and the unit POST at 580Mhz! We are right now calling Global Win and begging them to send us a CPM25603-12.

525MHz is niet slecht, maar het lijkt me dat je beter een veel goedkopere C333 kunt nemen, die je hoogstwaarschijnlijk op 5x100 of misschien zelfs 5x103 kunt draaien.
