| I have heard many people express concerns regarding the 32bit performance of the TNT after seeing the stellar 32bit performance of the Rage 128. Since both of these cards render 32bits internally anyway (I believe), the only difference between outputting at 16bits of 32bits is bandwidth. The Rage 128 reduces Z-buffer depth to 16bits when rendering 32bit color; while the TNT does exactly the opposite, raise the Z-buffer from 16bits (as it is in Quake2, I believe it can be configured for 24bits @ 16bit color) to 24bits. Doing the math, the bandwidth requirements per pixel with the TNT is 32+24 = 56bits, while the Rage 128 does an entire 32bit pixel using 48bits of bandwidth. This is a major reason why the Rage 128 is faster than the TNT at 32bit color.

Freetech P6F9li
Chipset: Intel BX
Bus Speeds: 66/68/75/83/100/112/133
Multipliers: 3.0x-8.0x
DIMM Slots: 3
PCI Slots: 5
ISA Slot: 2
AGP Slot:1 (x2 supported)
SB-Link: Yes
Freetech were an unknown quantity to me when I was first asked if I would like to review some of their boards. Let me say straight away they are no "Mr. Generic" of the motherboard world! Designed in the USA and manufactured in Taiwan, this new startup company are hitting the ground running with a number of boards including this BX based offering, as well as entries in the Socket 370 arena, video cards and even dual SCSI BX motherboards. Let's take a look at what this new company have brought to the table....
The board comes with 5 PCI slots, 2 ISA slots, AGP and 3 DIMMs. Surrounding the CPU slot are 7 large capacitors rated at 1500uf. Several mid-range capacitors line up around the DIMM slot and the PCI slots. IDE connectors are conventionally placed adjacent to the DIMM slots, and the ATX power connector is positioned between Slot 1 and the Parallel / COM Port output block. Its all pretty much standard fare as far as layout it concerned - nice and sensible with no obvious obstructions to fitting full length ISA or PCI cards. There are a actually a couple of revisions of this board floating around. Earlier revisions have a jumper marked "manufacturer test mode", which, to me is like a red rag to a bull :) Upon experimentation, I found this jumper set is actually a pin b21 override, although you need to clear the CMOS to fully take advantage of 100 MHz+ bus speeds. On later revisions, pin b21 override is explicitly supported.(revision 1B) and later.
The P6F9li provides overclocking support in the guise of "support for future CPU's". A jumper is provided which if uncovered allows the override of b21 pin detection, forcing the board into 100Mhz operation. Taking a similar approach to design as Epox, the CPU is set up with a combination of both BIOS soft setting and also an array of jumpers.
en wat verbaast mij...

Ventilator fanatiekelingen, sla nu je slag... Blowers on Sale
Cooling fanatics, our time has come. Those nifty Radio Shack blowers are on sale. For those of you with access to a Radio Shack (I think all Radio Shacks are in the US of A), you should all run down there and pick up as many of these "Brushless DC Blowers" as you can. I can't stress more how well these work at circulating air through the hot zone that can sometimes be confused with my case. For those of you that have not seen them, they look somewhat like 4 inch tall snails with a side port that sucks air and an exit port that shoots it out in the direction you aim it. They are on sale now for $6.99 instead of $9.99 and if you're like me and buy them 5 at a time, that little discount turns into $15. So what are you waiting for, go get 'em.
Also, if anyone has any recommendations as to what I could use to line my case with for soundproofing I'd appreciate it if you'd pass them on to me. The blowers are very quiet but my main intake and exhaust fans are puttin out a few too many decidels. Enough for my friends to ask, "You got some sort of jet engine going in there?"
Oh, and lastly, I've placed an order for a Tennmax Lasagna cooler to try out on my TNT. I should have my first imprssions up by this weekend.

Abit BX6-2 in stores already & BM6 news
Word on the street is that the Abit BX6-2 has already hit selected stores. (Click here to read the Firingsquad Abit BX6-2 review)
Our sources tell us that there was only a very limited supply of BX6-2 boards sent out to distributors, since their supplies were already backlogged from the high demand of their BH6 boards. We are told the second shipment of the BX6-2 boards won't go out until February 1st, so if you want 'em now, get 'em while they last.

Langzamer werken, kan de prijzen van SDRAMS beinvloeden.... According to an article in EBNews, workers agreed to a work "slowdown" at the 7 Korean DRAM manufacturing plants owned by LG Semicon. Workers are protesting the selloff of the plants to Hyundai over concerns about job security. Right now manufacturing output is at 50% of normal, and if the slowdown continues, it could affect the worldwide price of computer memory.

MP3s op gewone cd-spelers... Not strictly hardware or gaming related but I thought this news bit was still relevant to most readers' interests. GoodNoise is teaming with Adaptec to make software that will allow normal CD players to read MP3s. Imagine bringing a portable CD player to the park or library and carrying 8-10 hrs worth of music instead of the paltry 30 min that the RIO allows. Or popping in one CD for a long car trip and never having to change it. Time for those fat cat record company execs to sweat through some more sleepless nights! Read the story on Wired.
