The Athlon 800 is a terrific CPU held back by one thing: its 2/5 core speed L2 cache. With the upcoming availability of Athlon's with integrated L2 cache (rumored to be 512K in size) running at the same speed as the processor coupled with the upcoming availability of motherboards based on the KX133 chipset, we have a hard time suggesting anyone spend $900 on a brand new Athlon 800 processor and another $130-$160 on an Athlon motherboard. After all, in a matter of months just think of the performance you can buy with that $1060. With the release of the Athlon 800, the low-end Athlon CPU's are ripe for the picking. Now that the Athlon 500's are no longer being produced, 550's and 600's will probably become the CPU's of choice for Athlon overclockers. Simply strap on your Golden Fingers card and you're ready for some overclocking!
This is the course we recommend for gamers interested in purchasing an Athlon CPU. Not shelling out nearly $1K for a product that is beginning to show signs of age.
