Faced with an imminent ruling in its landmark antitrust case, Microsoft has taken its cause to its shareholders, hoping the very people the company helped enrich will help it bring its case to government legislators and the public at large. In a letter to Microsoft shareholders, the company'schief operating officer, Robert Herbold, called upon investors to join the "Freedom to Innovate Network," a group purporting to champion Microsoft's cause of battling government intervention in the software industry, according to a report in Monday's The Wall Street Journal.
The network consists of Microsoft business partners, software developers, certified network engineers, and other supporters, and is said to number 50,000.
The letter encouraged Microsoft investors to speak out about government intervention in the software industry and warned that continued intervention could negatively impact the industry and the economy at large.
