Ik kwam bij Ace's Hardware een posting tegen over het effect van de AMD AGP miniport drivers op de video performance van een Athlon systeem. Zonder de drivers kan de framerate met 50% naar beneden duikelen:
Be sure to check that you/ your reseller installed the AGP miniport (now version 4.43) when you install windows 98 on an Athlon system. I have seen with my own eyes, that some resellers do not install this chipset driver and just let Windows 98 install the drivers. Several readers have confirmed this. If no special AGP port is installed, windows 98 does not even install an AGP chipset driver. If you can find "AGP to PCI host bridge" among your system devices, everything is ok. If You can't, you now know why your system "crawls". Especially with the Geforce 256, the AGP miniport is extremely important; here are the results of Quake 3, with the 3D Prophet (GPU : nVidia Geforce 256), 3.35 OpenGL drivers (T&L acceleration).[...] No AGP mini port = abysmal performance ! Running Indy3D, the PIIIB was even twice as fast as the crippled Athlon system ! To be perfectly clear: The AMD 750 chipset has no problems at all with Videocards and AGP. It just requires specific chipset drivers.
