Before the end of next year, 3Com Corp. [NASDAQ: COMS] will unveil technology that allows Internet users to connect wirelessly, via laptop, at speeds of up to two megabits per second (Mbps) - more than four times faster than a standard 56 Kbps dial-up connection - 3Com executives announced at a telecommunications conference in Geneva today. With typical wireless connection speeds hovering at around 14 Kbps, the new technology represents a massive leap in the realm of wireless connectivity, 3Com spokesperson Mark Bingham contended.
3Com is developing the technology as part of a newly announced three-pronged wireless strategy aimed at providing wireless connections to consumers at home, at work and "on the move."
[...] Home consumers will be able to use the wireless LAN technology to connect to the Internet, play networked games and connect multiple computers "without punching holes in the walls and laying Ethernet cords all over the house," he said.
