Looking at the benchmarks it is plain to see that at 800Mhz the Athlon is truly a monster. Even at 600MHz it is no slouch and comfortably beats Intel's offerings. However, when 'thermally accelerated' it virtually takes off. With the Athlon AMD have extended the 3D Now! instruction set by adding 19 new ones. In doing so 3D Mark's default 3D Now! optimisations are not really best suited to the Athlon. They have released a patch that does allow better testing of this enhanced 3D Now! instruction set hence the 'optmised' results. Despite these extra optmisations the Athlon will still beat the equivalent P3 on equal terms.
