Multiplayer is the central focus of Quake III Arena, and mechanically it will be very similar to the single player game in many respects, with live players replacing the AI-controlled bots. Deathmatch play with this title is more heavily oriented towards fast action than it was in earlier versions of Quake; in addition to featuring faster character movement, ladders have been all but removed from the game in favor of jump pads that will hurl the player in a given direction. Weapons have received some work as well—a number of perennial favorites such as the super shotgun and the rail gun will be making return appearances, but Quake 2's hyperblaster has been nixed in favor of more useful weapons such as the plasma rifle and a flame-thrower. If the recently released deathmatch test is any gauge, Quake III Arena's weapons look to have the same visceral appeal that has helped to make past id titles popular.
