When the words matter . . .
The chip is so important to AMD that it decided to test the name with potential customers, sources said. They told AMD that K7, as it has been known, was a bad name. It sounded too much like its previous chip, the K6 -- and that meant a cheap chip destined to be used in low-cost computers. But AMD has no intentions of letting the new chip become a cheap chip anytime soon. It wants to sell it for premium prices to makers of high-end desktop computers for consumers and businesses. So it changed the name from K7 to Athlon, which the focus groups liked better. [break]En over de prijs van de AMD Athlon zeggen ze het volgende:[/break] Unlike recent processors made by AMD, Athlon won't be a bargain-priced chip destined to be used in very low-priced computers. Analysts expect the chip to sell in the same price range as Intel Corp.'s high-end Pentium III chips, which are selling for about $600.
