The company on Wednesday announced plans to discontinue its current MII processor line and sell off designs for the forthcoming next-generation Gobi microprocessor, developed by its Cyrix division. National will focus instead on integrated processors for the Internet appliance market.Steve Tobak, vice president of marketing at National Semiconductor, said an intense downward pricing pressure in the PC microprocessor space and an inability to differentiate the MII from its competitors, led to the decision to pull back. However, he said the company will continue to supply product to the channel during the transition.
"As far as the channel and our OEM customers are concerned, today's announcement should be virtually invisible," he said. "We will continue to sell to that market for the foreseeable future."
